  • Jackie Chan the Communism defender

Americans know Jackie Chan best for his cheery, acrobatic performances in action movies such as “Rumble in the Bronx” and “Rush Hour,” made successful by his amazing martial artistry and self-effacing comedy. Chinese know Chan, a Hong Kong native, for largely the same reasons. But they also know him for something most Americans might find surprising: He is passionately political, a staunch defender of the Chinese Communist Party and harsh critic of anyone he sees as opposing Beijing. Today, that includes the United States.

And his wife is Taiwanese. Plus his son was American. He is just a big mouth actor. A few years ago, he said that the Chinese TVs would blow up. Will that constitute him as anti-communism?

That's what he wants to do, criticizes Communist government "behind the door" but becomes their mouthpiece and feeds propaganda to foreigners outside it. I wonder which version he uses to teach his son, "indoor" or "outdoor"? But I doubt if Jaycee Chan considers himself an American.

what is the point of this.... he is an actor, not a political figure nor a philosopher. Don't watch his flick if you don't like it. I have stopped watching his crap since high school

Xinhui, the point is no one should praise the Chinese government in any sort of way even if it came from some big mouth actor. Otherwise, he or she will become a communist sympathizer and mouthpiece. The problem is people who portray Jackie as a Communist mouthpiece or fear about the Chinese propaganda should first look at the world today. What kind of propaganda is the dominate ideology? For a communist nation that its number one enemy is the Maoists and its number one problem is wealth poor gap, its actions and reality speak louder than words.

As for Jackie and his son Jaycee Chan,
Jaycee Chan considered himself as an American or not. It is his business, not ours.

As for Jackie, an actor is an actor. He is no politician. People might watch Jackie Chan's movies but very few would give a damn about his views. In HK, people called Jackie as a hypocrite, and making all sort of jokes about him. He got criticized for making many stupid comments. Do people give much weight about Jackie's opinions? next to zero. Do people watch Jackie's movies? Some do.

In India Jackie Chan has a very big fan following. Indians do like his movies for the comedy he brings in the fight scenes.
So what if he speaks for his country? If he did not, someone would call him a traitor.

However, the demi-God status is reserved for Bruce Lee.

              Cheers!...on the rocks!!

Jackie's reputation in HK tanked a little bit because of the cheating scandal. Although, his wife didn't and doesn't give a damn about it as long as she is still Mrs. Chen.

Uh, excuse me if i raise one question.

When exactly did supporting the government of the PRC become support of communism?

Because the PRC hasn't been even remotely communist since at least 1976.

But they still claim to be communists. What could we tell them? That they are just a bunch of fake communist power hunger greedy dictators?

Jackie Chan, shown here at a comedy show in San Diego, disparaged the United States on a Chinese TV show. (Kevin Winter/Getty Images)
He isn't at a comedy show in San Diego. He is at ComicCon the worlds largest comic book/toy/movie/sci-fi event. He was there with the other actors and crew (Oliver Platt musician Kenny G, and Korean actor Kwone Sang Woo) from his new movie "Chinese Zodiak".
