Or is it Amphibious Force Commander RAdm. Theodore Wilkinson.
But at the time I thought Adm. Aisworth was in command of all Destroyers.

    • Couple more hints before I give up the answer. The admiral had a Sprucan named for him and later in the year the 35th president had a run in with a Japanese destroyer in the same body of water.

        • How about the Battle of Blackett Strait under Merrill

          • Bingo. He received a Legion of Merit for the action, the first surface engagement controlled solely by fire control radar. The Murasame and Minegumo were the 2 Japanese destroyers sunk. Later that year John F Kennedy and the crew of PT 109 would be rammed by another Japanese destroyer. The PT boats patrolling the straits that had radar installed had already left the area after using all of their torpedoes in an earlier attack. PT 109 was not equipped with radar and was unaware of the destroyer until too late.

DD-976 was named for Adm Merrill.

            All yours.

              • The tragedy at Ismid that occurred on this ship was responsible for a change in naval gunnery that is with us today.

Name the ship and gunnery change.

                    • A design first for this ship meant it carried less hemp than previous ships of her type.

                      • And relating to a recent question this ship also had a ram.

The ship is also the name of a peek in the Rocky Mountains.

                        • USS Pike SS-173. It was the first all welded hull US submarine so less hemp was needed for plugging up leaks.

What does that have to do with changes in gunnery procedures?

                            • The hemp was mostly in the form of sailcloth.
The ship is also the name of an Engineering College.
