  • BB-48 40mm Tub with canvas

Inside of twin 40mm tub on USS Pensylvania
Appears that both battleships used the canvases in 40mm tubs for similar purposes? I note the sailor holding his ears. LOUD BOOM-BOOM !!

    • I imagine that salt spray drying on the cartridges could lead to stoppages on the guns, it appears that these cover flaps were designed to prevent this.

Why yes, Little know fact....the 40mm Bofurs cannon was not just used in the quad form for AA fire aboard ships but also used for the AC-130 Herc (present) and for other aircraft. They also became the Saluting Cannon aboard many Naval vessesls. The Iowa's carried two after the 80's reactivation, one port one starboard (just fore of amidships or either Mt 51 or Mt 52 pending which side you view ) for saluting purposes and other vessels did as well.;)

I saw those on BB64 and asked why they didn't have elevation and training gear, I wasn't aware they were 40mm Bofors, without all the machinery, thanks for insight

          • Saluting Mount 40mm. Please do forgive date. Camera error. One might think the Iowas had very close serial numbers.

            • They were well "greased" before the mount would open up with AA fire. Cartidges of 5 were dropped into the loading mechanism and all had to be well greased. The passages are there aboard the BB's but have been welded over as Rusty knows quite well.;)

The 40mm Amidships port gun has no "pockets" for extra shells. Such a feature must have been removed, or was not consistent with all mounts?

Did you notice the well rubbed "trainer's handwheel" ? Now if every visitor would carry a small can of brasso and a cloth all the bright work could shine.
When I toured "Old Ironsides" in the 1980's, I was so impressed how deep the polish was on the brass threshold as you stepped on board.

Question, is it really possible to keep the brass so brilliant @ sea?

                  • Hmm, Im looking at the black painted structure on the breech end. That would be the location of it if it is attached.

This would have been the standard 4 clip for loading. Perhaps maybe the loading mechanism has the covers over them. This is for a AC-130 aircraft 40mm Bofurs.
Foot treadle trigger just like the 5 /38 DP's.

This was the Iowas 40mm during WWII. If you zoom the pic in the lower left corner you can see the loading mechanism sleeve.

In this pic of New Jersey, the sailor to the right is handling a 4 round clip for loading. Intrepid (CV-11), struck by a kamikaze off the Phillippines on 25 November 1944 is burning in the background.

In this pic the shells are loose in holders and being greased before being assembled in to 4 round clips.

Your saluting cannons are single barrel, and have an arm lever on the breech instead of a treadle trigger.

*Im sure there are work crews aboard or individual asssignments that touch the brass they have at sea very often.

Not on all guns. The gun you picture should have quite a few "Ready Ammo Lockers" nearby.

The key to shiny brightwork is a good coat of varnish;)

                              • Wiki urban legend or Chrysler "king maker?" ?

The Navy's satisfaction with the weapons (40mm Bofor AA ) was demonstrated by their practice of telegraphing Chrysler Corporation with the serial numbers of guns when they shot down an aircraft.[1] Source - "Chrysler Corporation, Gun Maker: Bofors Guns of World War II".
