  • Tug Rhea is back in Philadelphia to reportedly pick-up Barry for her final voyage. Miss Rui delivered Ticonderoga to Brownsville this past week. https://youtu.be/qFHNwbN2EW0

    • Tug Miss Rui delivered ex-Hawes (FFG-53) to EMR/ISL last week and is heading back to Philly to grab ex-Stephen W. Groves (FFG-29). That will keep EMR/ISL busy until the two carriers are ready for scrapping. (Disclaimer: I'm merely presuming they will get the two carriers based on the fact they've scrapped most of the carriers in the last few years)

      • Miss Rui left today (5th November) eta Brownsville 17th. DLA website reports International Shipbreaking paid $240 for all 5 ships. The original sales offer seems to have included LPD-12 (Shreveport) instead of Ticonderoga until MARAD found out and claimed they had the sole right to sell the amphib and the switch was made.

Although there is no more public information about the sale of the two carriers it has been confirmed that Kitty Hawk is programmed to go into drydock at PSNS in March next year and come out in May. The scrapper must then get it to their facility no later than 12/30/2021. JFK is still 12 months from date of contract.

        • The NVR reports the following for the Nassau (LHA-4):
          NASSAU (LHA 4)
          AMPHIBIOUS ASSAULT SHIP (GENERAL PURPOSE)
          VESSEL STATUS
          Class: LHA 1 UIC: 20725
Status: Disposed of through Inter or Intra Agency Transfer Fleet:
          Date status Changed: 12/08/2020

Does anyone know the details of this or what agency received her?
          • There was at least one humanitarian group after her to turn her into a hospital ship
          • Perhaps Marad to sell her for scrap?
          • Then there was this interesting nugget... https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-...l/701/all-info
It seems to have died, but it's interesting nonetheless...

          • Marad updated the monthly lists of the NDRF today.

They confirm that the Nassau was transferred to them on the disposal list on 12/08/2020. The ship's condition has been regarded as poor since it entered the BRF so some kind of deterioration may be a factor in the decision.

The Cape Mendocino (barge/heavy lift ship) which was also listed as poor has been added to the scrapping list as well.

            • Ex-Kitty Hawk (CV 63) dry docks at PSNS & IMF

By PSNS & IMF Public Affairs | Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility | March 4, 2021

Attack aircraft carrier USS KITTY HAWK (CVA-63) steams the Pacific Ocean July 21,1969.

              BREMERTON, Wash. —
Ex-Kitty Hawk (CV 63) will be dry docked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Intermediate Maintenance Facility, March 5.

The dry-docking will allow the Navy to remove marine growth from the hull of ex-Kitty Hawk in order to prevent the potential spread of invasive species before towing it to a dismantling facility to be determined at a later date. The vast majority of material removed from the ship’s hull will consist of kelp and barnacles.

Decaying marine growth removed from the hull may generate odor. While the Navy is taking actions to reduce any impacts, the odor may be detectable in surrounding communities beyond the installation’s fence line. Containment systems and prompt shipment will be in place to minimize odor by capturing and properly disposing of the marine growth.

In March 2020, the Navy entered into a Settlement Agreement regarding litigation over the in-water removal of marine growth from the hull of ex-Independence (CV 62). The terms of this Agreement requires the Navy to conduct the hull cleaning of ex-Kitty Hawk in dry dock.

The ex-Kitty Hawk was decommissioned in 2009 after serving 48 years in support of U.S. Navy operations around the globe. Upon its decommissioning, ex-Kitty Hawk transited to the Navy’s Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, Washington, where it has been berthed for 11 years.

PSNS & IMF, the largest employer in Kitsap County, is committed to meeting its mission in a safe and cost-effective manner, while complying with federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations.

                    • The Kitsap Sun says that the last two CVs (Kitty Hawk and JFK) have now been sold to International Shipbreaking in Brownsville for a penny each. No dates are available yet for when they will be towed away.

In another devlopment MARAD has put all the LASH and SEABEE barge ships up for scrap sale, plus the last OPDS tanker (Petersburg) and the four Champion class tankers, as well as others. 15 ships in all

For the SBRF that means the Cape Fear, Cape Girardeau, Cape Jacob and Triumph are now listed for disposal. The Petersburg has already been moved to the BRF as have the Cape Mohican from Oakland and the Cape May from Norfolk to await their fate.

Cape Mohican disappeared from next to the Hornet, in Alameda, some months back. Next to disappear was the Adm. Callaghan maybe a month ago. In the last two weeks Grand Canyon State disappeared leaving just two ships next to the Hornet the Keystone State and Gem State. The view to the port side of the Hornet looking north is opening up.
