Jiang Zemin calls for "revolution" in China's military

    BEIJING (AFP) Nov 04, 2003

China's military strongman and ex-president Jiang Zemin made a rare public appearance Tuesday, urging military scholars and academics to push forward reform of the military, state press reported.
Jiang was seen on state television addressing a meeting of officers and personnel at China's top military academies and colleges.

"Directly faced with the development trends of a global revolution in military affairs, we must actively push forward the strategic task of a revolution in military affairs with Chinese characteristics," Jiang was quoted as saying.

"The key to ... bringing the military into the information age and being able to win an information-based war will be in people versed in science and technology," he added.

During the meeting, which was also attended by President Hu Jintao, a vice chairman of the CMC, Jiang urged military schools to step up efforts in science and technological training.

According to CCTV, the main tasks of the meeting were to follow Jiang's guidance, including his political theories, on reforming and improving military academies, military research and military training.

Also at the meeting were the CMC's two other vice chairmen Guo Boxiong and minister of defense Cao Gangchuan.

Jiang, who stepped down as the head of China's ruling Communist Party last November and as president in March, remains widely influential as the head of the powerful Central Military Commission (CMC).

Since being appointed as the head of the CMC in 1993 by his predecessor the late Deng Xiaoping, Jiang has embarked on the task of modernizing China's military and was seen as a driving force in putting a Chinese astronaut into space.
