      • Wow...I wonder if this portends our mid-term election.

So. Brexit. Still a thing? Any chance of Brexit being rescinded? Is that even legally possible?

He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

            • i lol'd at "dog with 2 dicks" line, that is a good one.

Corbyn is a fool, he's driven Labour into a massive ditch and is celebrating now because his opponent turned out to be even shockingly worse at retail politics than he is. Labour can't count on Conservative own-goals forever.

Might give an opportunity to water it down, but hard to see how it could be killed. There's currently a legal case going through the courts in Dublin to determin whether it is legally possible to recind article 50.

Highly unlikely though, at least without the EU approving it unanimously.

                      • I would think there is a high chance of another election in the Autumn.

I think Theresa May has to go; she wanted a mandate to negotiate a hard Brexit and whatever she has she has not got a mandate for that. One senior Tory was apparently heard saying "We all f***ing hate her. But there is nothing we can do. She has totally f***ed us". Trouble is who would replace her? Amber Rudd? She nearly lost her seat... Boris? God forbid he tries to negotiate Brexit... David Davis? I doubt he could win a Tory leadership election. There are others perhaps - Justine Greening but she does not have a high public profile. The main problem is that being able to get a majority of 4 (with DUP support) leaves the fringes very much in charge; those conservatives that voted remain for instance will be unlikely to vote for any Brexit deal that does not include membership of the single market and so such a deal would most likely not get through the Commons. So I think the whole thing has to be done again - with a new Tory leadership.

The best news (from my point of view) is the Tory revival in Scotland that hopefully forestalls any near future rerun of the Sottish Independence Referendum. It is perhaps a shame that the Scottish Conservative leader did not stand for a seat in Westminster - she clearly knows to run a campaign.

                        • i have to say that right now British politics seem absolutely dorked up to me. apparently May is not popular within Conservative circles...but on the other hand, Corbyn is detested by most of the Labour party members as well (but popular amongst the grassroots).

UKIP and Liberal Dems are dead as a doornail.

and this isn't something that's limited to the UK, of course, we see something similar in the US and France. established political parties of almost all stripes disintegrating. i would have figured this would come in the aftermath of the Great Recession and not years down the line. all very strange, and very disturbing...because there's some serious echoes of the early 1930s here.

                          • I do not see these gloomy "echoes of the early 1930s here", after all the broad mainstream vote increased - particularly if you regard the higher than expected Labour vote as a rejection (or reaction to) this 'hard Brexit' agenda which Mrs May seemed so wedded to. As I say I am most pleased in the resurgence of the unionist vote in Scotland which I regard as far more moderate than the sort of nationalist socialism (there is no other description for it) espoused by the SNP. Canterbury falling to Labour is the most surprising result - it has NEVER been held by anyone but the Conservatives since it was created as a constituency in 1918. The home of Canterbury Cathedral, shrine of St Thomas Becket and resting place of Edward the Black Prince where there is still a Council of City Elders who do not like extending licensing laws (pub opening hours) inside the city walls etc... Thank God it still has a conservative local council!

I think a good case could be made for all three of the main Party leaders should resign; May got it horribly wrong and ran an appalling campaign by all accounts. Corbyn, for all the Tory mistakes and useless campaign could not force a win - it must be questioned if he ever can as the Tories are not likely to be woeful a second time. Tim (nice but who?) got a few more MPs but should have done so much better. Even Sturgeon lost! In fact nobody won - apart from perhaps the DUP. UKIP are now dead and only waiting for a hearse and grave diggers.

Rather than see it as an echo of the 1930s I see it more as a dearth of real political personalities - the UK is stuck with a bunch of second rate uncharismatic regurgitators of what they perceive to some 'doctrine'; there is a lack of innovation to appeal to new sectors of the electorate, a lack of hope and ideas; they are all happy behind entrenched lines as it were. A Blair or even a Cameron - let alone a Thatcher - would have walked this election as Macron did in France. I would wish a new Tory leader with the vision to appeal to the centre ground - maybe a Steve Baker or someone with Justine Greening in No 11. New blood and a new vision of mainstream hope that makes it clear that the alternatives are actually disastrous and extreme is needed.

I did actually get a voting form and considered voting Libdem as I do believe a referendum on any Brexit deal is only right but I thought it would be wrong to do vote as I now have Ukrainian citizenship and that voting Libdem would be a wasted vote anyway.

                            • Stolen from a friend . ha.

So the conservatives won...But lost ...Labour lost ....but won....the SNP won and lost in Scotland but still won and the conservatives won in Scotland but still lost.. .The government was Tory but now can't be, even though it still is? Now they need to make some Irish party turn Tory so they can still be in charge even though they were already in charge and still are.. UKIP lost, but because of Brexit they've already won ... 18 independent candidates won but then didn't win because they don't even have a party so they lost but are now MPs so they won ... The winner, Theresa May, is being told to resign because she didn't win but she won't resign because she won even though she lost... What just happened??

And if she resigns , my vote would be for J R Mogg .

                              • A fair summation by all accounts. I think Theresa has to go and a new election held but God knows where that would land you regarding Brexit negotiations which are all now but impossible anyway; with comments such as we have been reported by senior Tories how can the Europeans be sure May will last 6 months let alone 5yrs? This is a can of worms that needs to be discarded asap before it rots the heart out of the system.
