Originally posted by kato View PostI'd say it's pretty well-planned as a terrorist attack, with some thinking behind it. After all, terrorism isn't about killing people. It's about instilling fear. And having those one to three armed people at large in the city definitely is all about that.
Police reports that no hints or witness accounts so far point towards an islamist background. No allahu akbar or anything like that.
Listening to some witness accounts right now.
A witness who will only be identified as Lauretta told CNN her son was in a bathroom with a shooter at the McDonald's. "That's where he loaded his weapon," she said. "I hear like an alarm and boom, boom, boom... And he's still killing the children. The children were sitting to eat. They can't run." Lauretta said she heard the gunman say, "Allahu Akbar," or God is great. "I know this because I'm Muslim. I hear this and I only cry."

Yeah, and that's the only witness - and CNN as the only primary source - saying so. Police has counsellors supervising 100 witnesses from the mall right now.

Austria has activated its Cobra police special forces and also deployed 42 Cobra members across the border to Munich.

A nonuniformed police patrol encountered the gunman immediately after the incident - in the mall -, fired multiple shots at him, but lost him in the confusion of people fleeing in the shopping mall. Police acknowledges the suspect may have succumbed to shots fired by police instead of suicide, and is waiting for the autopsy for that. His body was found about two hours after the initial shooting relatively nearby - police however did not ease situation due to still seeking two bystanders as possible further suspects; the two had been making a rapid escape in their car from the site immediately after shots were fired.
Witness accounts further confused the situation as other people fleeing and in particular nonuniformed police officers with guns drawn or openly carried were interpreted as further gunmen both at the mall and at other public places in the city.
Victims are mostly youths within three years age difference to him, two girls and six boys aged 14-21; one was a 45-year-old woman. There is suspicion he may have intended to lure youths to the McDonalds restaurant using a fake or hijacked Facebook account.
There'll be a press conference in a short while.

From live press conference:
- motive:
- joint residence of gunman and parents was searched last night
- no IS or related islamist materials found at residence
- plenty of material on amok runs including psychological analyses of amok runs by youths found at residence, in addition to material on police procedures and measures in case of amok runs
- electronic data found at residence under evaluation
- current assumption by police is "classical amok run with no political connotations"
- federal attorney has already rejected taking over the case due to lack of terrorist motive
- perpetrator:
- 18-year old school kid
- held German and Iranian citizenships
- born and grown up in Germany; moved to Munich with his parents two years ago
- perpetrator was possibly - not yet confirmed - under psychologic treatment for depression
- previous police records on suspect are:
- a fight with three other people (case dropped as negligible)
- a theft by unknown person filed by the suspect (case cold)
- no criminal records.
- weapon:
- weapon of gunman was a 9mm Glock pistol
- presumed by police to be procured illegally as serial number was removed
- gunman still carried 300+ rounds ammunition in backpack
- police deployment:
- 2300 officers deployed in immediate area for the case during the night, 800 still on duty now
- SEK teams from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse states as well as federal GSG9 and austrian COBRA teams deployed
- after perp escaped from the mall regular officers mostly cordoned off and evacuated the wider area, police special forces then searched secured area for perpetrator until found
- hospitals in city, including Munich army hospital, as well as other emergency and disaster assistance services declared "potential mass case" activating full emergency response with standby triage and trauma teams
- emergency services went back to standard alert levels during the night, about 7 hours after the shooting.
- result:
- 9 deaths plus perpetrator; 27 injured, including 10 seriously; three still in critical condition.
- Only two adult victims; the 45-year-old and a 21-year-old.
- Youngest victim - seriously wounded - is a 13-year-old.
- civilian police patrol contact with gunman confirmed, at parking garage of mall; one of two shot at gunman, did not hit.
- suicide of perpetrator confirmed by autopsy; don't really need the details here.
Some further analysis published now remarks that material found suggests that the perpetrator "venerated" the amok runner of Winnenden, where a 17-year-old killed 15 people in 2009 using a gun legally owned by his father.Last edited by kato; 23 Jul 16,, 11:47.
