Liberals Win a Majority Government in Canada

I'm a little afraid of what will become of our military.

I foresee:

-Almost immediate removal of our troops, ships, and aircraft combating ISIS overseas.
-I doubt you'll see a CF-18 sent overseas for the duration of this government.
-Immediate cancellation of the F-35 (a new "fair" competition is to be conducted, but with the F-35 excluded - because that's somehow fair)
-A general rollback of money for the military, effecting troop strength and equipment capabilities.

We'll be flying the CF-18 for at least another 10 years, and I'd be shocked if the destroyers were replaced.

Not really excited about the economy for the next few years either.

Sad day for myself and my family.

We went through the same recession as the US in 08-09, however, I've always felt we didn't go as low and recovered more quickly then the US.

The current low oil prices are having an extreme effect on our oil and gas business at the moment.

Justin will have even tighter restrictions and regulations on the oil sector (where I work), kind of like adding insult to injury at this point.

The Liberals ran on a platform where they promised to throw money at nearly everything and rack up a deficit. I don't recall any politician running on a platform that didn't include at least lip service to a balanced budget.

It's self inflicted. We voted him in.

However, this was bound to come. At best, the Conservatives was going to get a minority government which would mean another election in 2 years.

Sorry, forgot to add my condolences before, but heh, the pendulum swings. One bright side: Treudeaux seems to be promising to force through a replacement for First past the post. In NZ this ended up favouring centre to right parties, much to the anger of the left who were its strongest advocates at the time.

I can't blame the general public after such a long (for Canada) campaign that seriously lacked substance on all sides and where the Conservatives didn't seem to try very hard to get their values and platform across to the public that the Liberals were granted a majority government. But I sure am disappointed.

Even I'm shocked how quickly that happened. You would think Trudeau would at least wait until he has had a briefing from the CSIS and RCAF chiefs before making such a bold move.

However, Trudeau has promised to direct savings from the F-35 cancellation to building more ships for the naval forces.

I'm willing to bet that the savings will be achieved by basically not replacing the CF-18 or delaying the replacement by several years rather than a simply a new fighter being selected for procurement.

In any case, the "new Navy ships" will undoubtedly be icebreakers and coast guard vessels. The Liberals would like the Canadian military to be turned back into the peacekeeping and assistance force it was during the previous liberal governments in recent history.

We don't know that yet. The navy sure as hell could use new ships. They're an embarrassment right now.
