A major review of sexual assaults by someone other than a partner published in The Lancet was prompted by recent highly publicised rapes and murders of young women in India.

For those interested enough, here is the full finding: Worldwide prevalence of non-partner sexual violence: a systematic review : The Lancet

Lately, I was shocked by the Scandinavians and violent sexual offences there.

The Lancet searched for rape reports in the media and sampled them.

Have to read it in whole later, but this caught my eye. Wonder how accurate are the numbers and if they are in proportion.

    Methods
We searched for articles published from Jan 1, 1998, to Dec 31, 2011, and manually search reference lists and contacted experts to identify population-based data on the prevalence of women's reported experiences of sexual violence from age 15 years onwards, by anyone except intimate partners. We used random effects meta-regression to calculate adjusted and unadjusted prevalence for regions, which we weighted by population size to calculate the worldwide estimate.

      What a mess.

      A sad commentary.

Look forward to the sharing more of this bottled up angst here and discussing reasons and possible solutions.

Sure there are rapes everywhere. But when you send your girl to school wondering if she's one of the 6 of her classmates who's going to be sexually assaulted by the time they hit 15. Now that's something no father wants to think about.

What's with the "someone other than your partner"? The vast, overwhelming majority of sexual violence occurs within relationships.

Even when you go through police reports. It's just not reported in the media, hence not within their scope.

Even more shocking in such a case. If 1 out of 6 Australian women are sexually assaulted outside intimate relationships, what then is the statistic of assaults within relationships?

If that's the overwhelming majority, then does that push the total statistic towards more one out of every two Australian women?

I would definitely like to hear Minskaya weighing in on this hitherto hidden outrage against what she stands for and holds dear. We do seem to have been missing the forest for the trees all this time.

Of note, Ukraine at 6.9% is more than twice the percentage of Indian women suffering sexual assault by the age of 15.

Of course that pales in front of the USA and Canada at 13%.

Only the women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe fare worse.

            What is happening?

Its really an affront to the senses of all propriety when upholders of the law abuse their position and power on the weak whom they are supposed to protect.

Where does one turn in such a case?

Sad and shocking. Police brutality at its worst.

Note that this is reported incidence, and so on so forth about statistical methodology.

Of course. Its the Western world we are talking about.

                      It MUST be statistical methodology.

Stupid to believe otherwise. Lets concentrate on countries where the statistics actually work .....

Another entirely predictable thread. Didn't Ambidex start one of these last time there was a thread about rapes in India? YAWN

As for the figures, utterly meaningless. Rape & sexual assault is a problem in Australia because it happens. Full stop. One is too many. We take the issue VERY seriously. Comparing figures to other nations is pointless because reporting rates, recording rates & the way statistics are compiled vary so incredibly wildly. Australian criminologists are even reluctant to compare rates for crimes other than murder between states as a result of this.

Of course, none of this actually matters, as the point of this thread wasn't actually to discuss or understand the issue, just to deflect & take pot shots. Classy. Really classy.
