It is located about 400 miles northeast of Sochi and is a key transit hub to southern Russia. The attacks are no doubt the work of the Caucasus Emirate, a Chechen Muslim group that has promised to disrupt the February Winter Olympics in Sochi. Russian sources report that about 600 police from Volgograd had been transferred to Sochi to help secure the Olympic venue.
