  • Home Run Derby

Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A's resoundingly won the MLB annual Home Run Derby last night at Citi Field in New York. He pounded 32 home runs into the New York night, tied for the third-most anyone has ever hit in one of these mash-fests. One of the blasts struck a truck 455 feet from home plate and three others landed in the never before reached third deck in left field. Cespedes is a second year player from Cuba and becomes the first contestant to win the Derby while not a participant in the MLB All-Star game Tuesday night. ¡Enhorabuena!

Detroit Tigers coach Jim Leyland used 10 pitchers en route to an American League 3-0 shutout of the rival National League. White Sox pitcher Chris Sale was the winning pitcher of record with Mariano Rivera (setup) and Joe Nathan (closer) taking care of the 8th and 9th innings. Rivera was named game MVP. The AL will now enjoy home field advantage come October.
