      Gustav and Dora were the same design - the two examples built each had a different name

      The German 16" gun was a naval design for the H class battleships that were never completed. The completed guns were instead used as coast defense guns in static mounts (as compared to the Soviet SPG mounts above). Two were on the Atlantic wall - Battery Lindeman, and several more were sent to Norway - where they were still used after WWII by the Norwegians.

          The mention of God led to the mention of Artillery - then we had some discussion about which was bigger, tank or artillery - artillery seemed to prevail - so the dicussion continued on with the subject at hand - very large artillery...

                She was a mean one that - not surpassed until the Tomahawk with 200KT W-80 which thereticaly could have been carried on the 1980's reactivated Iowa's.

                This Mk 23 beastie had an airburst fuse and was tested at lower than usual altitude (500 feet in the 280mm Army gun shot, vs the more typical 2000 foot airburst altitude) - generating a particularly destructive precurcusor shock - it literally tore the targets to peices - targets not seriously damaged by an earlier 2000' shot. I believe this could have been very effective in a naval battle. Perhaps the Yamato would not have sunk right away (this is of course an implausible hypothetical scenario) - but I doubt she would have been in any shape to fight on after being hit by this shock - her guns would probably have been put out of action and her crew killed by prompt neutron emmisisons - her heavily irradiated hull becoming a tomb for the unlucky Japanese sailors inside.
