I fail to see anything funny on that picture.

Au contraire, if you look at his fingers are placed, he's actually desperately trying to prevent the skirt from falling over her head.

Given that they sensor the internet, that's probably the closest thing to porn he'll lay his hands on.

Yep, it remains to be seen if any sanctions preventing such can pass.

Not really. When it comes to sex, Iran is no different to any other nation on the planet. Page 1 of a Google search using any standard keyword should suffice .....

                          From the OP's NYTimes article

The scale of the attack — led by hundreds of students described as members of the Basij militia by the Iranian state media — appeared to surprise even some Iranian officials.
Why would Iran state media admit this

                          Meanwhile some background..

                          Britain is being targeted because..

The sanctions imposed by Britain were considered the most severe as they required that all contacts with the Iranian Central Bank be severed, a step that other countries, including the United States, did not take.
The sanctions imposed are unilateral as the below article indicates and cannot hope to include major Asian countries because of their oil dependence on Iran.

United States and Its Allies Expand Sanctions on Iran | NY Times | Nov 21 2011

China, Japan and other countries use Iran’s central bank to process transactions from their purchases of Iranian oil, in part because most of Iran’s major commercial banks are already subject to sanctions. They would be likely to resist an order to stop dealing with the central bank, and this would put the administration in an untenable position, since the United States could not sever its ties with Chinese or Japanese banks.

Mr. Obama could request a waiver to exempt such institutions from the ban, but experts on sanctions said that such a waiver would undermine the credibility of the United States. The White House has been under pressure from Republicans to designate the central bank, and has worked to forestall such legislation.

The administration has telegraphed its intention to seek further sanctions against Iran since the publication of the nuclear agency’s report. The White House pushed the agency to be as detailed as possible in its evidence of Iran’s nuclear activities as a way of building international support for sanctions. But Russia and China both pushed back, with Russia arguing that diplomacy is still the best course.

Maybe they didn't think it was an admission. The Basij is a disparate collection of Iranian youth and older men below the Revolutionary Guards in the pecking order. My impression is that they are a nuisance even to the leadership.

In an astonishing turn of events, Iranian police forcefully evicted members of the hardline Basij militia from a Tehran stadium during a football match earlier this month. Even more surprising is the fact that the stadium’s audience booed the militiamen, at the risk of angering one of the most feared and brutal armed groups in the country.

More what I suspect. But that is the way the IR operates. Most young people in Tehran support the green movement and oppose the Mullahs.

I bet if they'd been protesting against the ban on waterfights they'd be rounded up a bit faster. That this was not prevented is either due to incompetence or tacit support on behalf of the Government. Neither explanation suggests that sanctions should be reconsidered or withdrawn. I expect us to keep a fairly high Charge d'Affairs there if we can get guarentees of safety in future. As the Iranian Foreign Affairs Ministry has already apologised I suspect this will be the case.
