  • Damage Reports, US Battleships and Operation Crossroads

Damage reports of the USN Battleships after the Able and Baker tests at Bikini Atoll during Operation Crossroads 1946.

This is how some of the older USN Battleships met their end after WWII and the damage they incured during the tests. These are the most accurate information on the ships. It was declassified in 1997. These are just a few of the reports.

If you want to know if they would survive major damage, heres your answers. Enjoy.

Some background on the tests as far as explanations, ships, positioning etc.

BB33 Arkasas was destroyed and sunk in the Baker test inside the lagoon at Bikini.

BB34 New York survived both tests and was later sunk by Naval gunfire and air strikes off Oahu, HI.

BB36 Nevada survived both tests and was sunk by Naval gunfire including USS Iowa BB61 and 3 heavy cruisers off Oahu, HI.

BB39 Pennsylvania survived both tests and was taken out beyond the Kwajeline and her seacock valves opened and allowed to sink unmolested.

Interesting history. The recital about battleships which very little popular stories are written about in WW II.

The above was stated by Navsource. It is apparent that this may be a misprint as these are CL's apparently that accompanied Iowa. In other words "Cruiser Light" with 6" guns as a heavy cruiser would have been CA or "Cruiser Armored" with 8" guns.

These three cruisers would have been Pasadena CL-65, Springfield CL-66 and Astoria CL-90 along with BB61.

Wonder if they went aboard at any time and assessed the damage BB61 did to Arkansas? Sure wish there was some film of BB's participating in a SinkEx like that.

Maybe not, the radiation on BB-33 would have been dangerous, steel gets neutron activated by a nuclear explosion and becomes very radioactive itself.
