So far we have hundreds of bodies recovered wiht hundreds more certain & the possibility of up to 10,000 missing. This is going to be bad.

Should raw analytical data ever be passed to policy makers?

Oh no... Japan as a nation has certainly suffered from earthquakes, tsunamis, and the fires that inevitably result. Didn't the traditional Japanese wood, paper, overall lightweight construction methods evolve as a response to frequent earthquakes?

Are there any U.S. assets in the area that can assist?

          Tigger,

They dropped the warnings here earlier this evening. Fortunately the tsunami has turned out to be not very much outside Japan (thought I'm not sure if has reached Hawaii yet). Fortunately a tsunamis emanating in Japan has a lot of awful big islands & a big ole coral reef to get past before it hits us. Thanks for the thought, but I think we'll be fine.

            Chogy,

It appears that modern Japanese buildings are pretty handy too - very few actual earthquake related deaths. The problem is the tsunami. I'm sure there are plenty of US assets in the region, it is just a question of what if anything is b=needed. perhaps a few specialist search & rescue teams, but I'm not sure what else. The joy of being a rich country like Japan is that you tend not to need much help in these situations. I'm sure that as with other such disasters help will be offered from all quarters.

After watching that water speeding in land through industrial estates, villages and towns the numbers could be very high. The water returning to the Ocean can be just as devastating and catch people out. Terrible situation for the Japanese

The USS George Washington is based in Yokosuka, no? I'd be terribly surprised if they weren't already in the area offering some sort of assistance

Seems counter-intuitive given the amount of water present.

Seen footage with just that though

The USS Abraham Lincoln CSG is in Japan and has reported in. Also all US military bases in the region are up and running so that is a buttload of airfeilds.

The cooling system of nuclear power plant in N. Japan failed. Gov't declares nuclear emergency and is evacuating people from the area surrounding it.

Tsunami heading for California according to CNN.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

Libya's dropped off the headlines. It's all about Japan now, been that way for hours.

This is the thing with 24hr news, its just comes across as more deadly serious.

Human induced strife and warfare usually are not as deadly as natural disasters. The earth sneezes and thousands die. The earth shudders a bit and wipes out cities. We are insignificant compared to the power of nature.
