The battle of Ong Thanh took place on October 17th 1967 near Lai Khe town, northwest of Saigon between 2nd-28th Infantry Regiment (Black Lions) and unknown strength of Vietnam Communist forces.
Moving inside jungle, 142 Americans were attacked by the enemies from great-fortified posts. About 64 U.S. soldiers got killed as result, almost all remaining wounded.
This brief battle is very little known in the U.S. documentary as one of the bloodiest U.S. defeat during Vietnam War.
