Serbian request for Ganic’ extradition rejected Print

The court in London has rejected the request of Serbia for the extradition of a former member of Bosnia-Herzegovina Presidency Ejup Ganic. After that decision of the court, the Serbian side has the right of complaint before the Higher Court, where new procedure will be held. After that, the request for extradition will be decided upon by the British Minister of Police, and his decision is to be confirmed by the House of Lords. Ganic was arrested on March 1, after the warrant of the Serbian office of Interpol, and ten days later he war released on bail of 300 thousand euro, and forbidden to leave great Britain until the court verdict on his extradition. In December 2008, after the request of the War Crime Prosecution, the Higher Court in Belgrade has initiated an investigation against Ganic, suspected of participation in giving orders for the attack on the facilities of the Yugoslav People’s Army, contrary to the agreements on peaceful retreat of YPA units from Bosnia-Herzegovina. One of those attacks took place in May 1992, during the organize retreat of Yugoslav People’s Army from Sarajevo, when 42 soldiers were killed, 73 wounded and 218 of them taken prisoners.

Considering he was held due to the warrant of arrest after coming to UK to visit Buckingham University (which is twinned with Sarejevo University, of which he is Chancellor) this court ruling seems quite absurd. What will do with him now is a hot topic. An appeal is launched but I think long term Ganic is off to Serbia or the Hague.
