    * Russian S-300 missile contract unaffected by Iran sanctions - ministry

The U.S. State Department said on Friday that the delivery of Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran is not against the recently imposed UN sanctions.

The Resolution 1929, adopted on Wednesday, imposes the fourth round of sanctions against Iran, including tougher financial controls and an expanded arms embargo. It also imposes an asset ban and a travel freeze on more than three dozen companies and individuals.

"The [Resolution] 1929 prohibits the sale and transfer of items on the U.S. Register of Conventional Arms, which does not include the S-300. That said, this is a sale that Russia concluded with Iran a number of years ago and Russia has exercised responsibility and restraint and has not, at this point, delivered those missiles to Iran," State Department spokesman Philip Crowley told a daily press briefing.

He said that the Resolution 1929 is aimed at strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime and provides a framework for addressing nuclear non-proliferation concerns of the global community.

"There's significant limitations on conventional weapons, missile technology, nuclear technology. It [the resolution] focuses on banking, financial sector and so forth," Crowley said.

"So we are looking for a strong, united international response to make it clear to Iran that it will pay a price for its current course and that it should — based on this pressure, that it will begin to feel — very quickly change course," he added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Thursday Russia would ensure "absolute protection for all significant channels of trade and economic cooperation existing between Russia and Iran."

Lavrov said Russia will also continue to cooperate with Iran on the Islamic Republic's first nuclear power plant.

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said the delivery of Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile systems to Iran will not be hit by the UN resolution.

      Not so fast..........Easy come...Easy go!

MOSCOW (AP) - A Kremlin official says Russia will not be able to deliver S-300 air-defense missiles to Iran because of the new U.N. sanctions.

The Kremlin official spoke the day after the Foreign Ministry spokesman said the sanctions did not forbid delivery of the missile systems.

Israel and the U.S. have urged Russia not to supply the S-300, which would substantially increase Iran's defense capability. Russia agreed to sell the missiles in 2007, but has not delivered them.

Among other things, the U.N. Security Council resolution passed Wednesday bans Iran from buying certain types of heavy weapons.

The Kremlin official, speaking Friday on condition of anonymity, said "the S-300 falls under these sanctions."

      Easy come, easy go!:))

A bit of dithering going on there.

Coincidently of course ;), the Saudis seem to have come out of the woodwork to put the following in the public realm.

From The Times June 12, 2010

Saudi Arabia gives Israel clear skies to attack Iranian nuclear sites.

Saudi Arabia has conducted tests to stand down its air defences to enable Israeli jets to make a bombing raid on Iran’s nuclear facilities, The Times can reveal.

In the week that the UN Security Council imposed a new round of sanctions on Tehran, defence sources in the Gulf say that Riyadh has agreed to allow Israel to use a narrow corridor of its airspace in the north of the country to shorten the distance for a bombing run on Iran.

To ensure the Israeli bombers pass unmolested, Riyadh has carried out tests to make certain its own jets are not scrambled and missile defence systems not activated. Once the Israelis are through, the kingdom’s air defences will return to full alert.

“The Saudis have given their permission for the Israelis to pass over and they will look the other way,” said a US defence source in the area. “They have already done tests to make sure their own jets aren’t scrambled and no one gets shot down.

This has all been done with the agreement of the [US] State Department.”

Who in the State Deparment agreed to this and to what extent caveats if any are placed on this agreement.

Unless A-Jad and his puppeteers are completely nuts, this public statement must remind them of similar agreements about Saudi air space for the use of coalition forces during the Gulf conflicts.

I find it interesting that Saudi Arabia, a country which has sent troops to fight in Israel and which still refuses to acknowledge their existence is willing to let the Israelis overfly Saidi airspace in order to get to Iran.

I wonder who came up with this plan and how it was implemented. It's actually a stroke of genius.

            Agreed Captain,
Sounds very much like a regime that "used" to be in power, One that also played games with the IAEA time and time again and beat their chest in defiance of UNSC and their sanctions. We already know the ending to that story. This one wont end the same as dinnerjacket and assahola's regime arent worth the price of putting even one set of boots on the ground. Take it out by distance.;)

*Iran has no love for the Saudi's and vise versa. They dont want a weapons race in the ME. If Iran achieves it, then others will to just to feel safe and block off Iranian influence. The Saudi's pretty much own the block and theres no room for someone like Iran and their influence and the terror they suppport through proxy.

I'm sure their new buddies the Turks cant be very happy with this announcement right now.:P

This could also very possibly be a "checkmate" to those in Iran and Turkey wishing to start more trouble over Gaza's naval blockade. IMO, A pretty good counterstroke. Beginning to look like Israel will get a green light and "play through" if all else fails.

I wonder how this recent news will play into dinnerjackets rhetoric. Theres more then likely alot of unhappy faces in Tehran's government right now.

              Poor things.:))

Bigross, I would be willing to bet your plums that the plan has been agreed and in existance for a long time. ;)

The timing of the public announcement and the mention of "State Department" within the message is punch line theatre at it's best.

                Cheers.

I can imagine dinnerjackets rhetoric right now.......

"Lies, Saudi Arabia does not even exist, we will shoot them down with lightning bolts from our asses"

...the very same place their logic seems to come from.:));)
