Police kill 2 suspected militants in Aceh

The Associated Press , Banda Aceh | Fri, 03/12/2010 1:53 PM | National

Police hunting members of a new terrorist group in Aceh fatally shot two suspects and arrested six others at a security checkpoint Friday, an official said.

On Tuesday, the group's alleged leader, Dulmatin, was shot dead near Jakarta.

Police killed two of eight suspects who fled from a bus that was stopped at a checkpoint 23 kilometers west of the Aceh provincial capital of Banda Aceh, provincial police chief Insp. Gen. Aditya Warman said.

There was a 15-minute gunbattle before the remaining six suspects surrendered and were arrested, Warman said.

Police seized five assault rifles from the suspects, he said.

Police have killed at least seven suspected militants in Aceh and in Banten in the past month since they raided a paramilitary training camp in Aceh they say was operated by Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asian offshoot of al-Qaida.

More than 30 Indonesians have been arrested and several have been charged with planning terrorist attacks.
