Exactly What and who do they deter?

Mutally assured destruction is not a benefit. NATO can continue without Europes nukes.

The reason I say America should keep them (apart from the fact everyone wants to blow america up) is that You cannot rid the world nukes, they cannot be uninvented. So the best situation we can have is a world with as few nukes as possible - In order to do that, most countries have to give them up. I think Europe is in a good position to do that.

It would make us at least look a little more credible when talking about proliferation to Iran and others.

Very little I would say. Perhaps we could spend those billions of euro on something other than bombs that never get used and make us look like hypocrites. How about some proper body armour for soldiers in afghanistan? or get them those helicopters they've been asking for?

Large powers like Russia would just use conventional forces against us because they know we would never actually use the nukes because its suicide!

A Hezbollah deployment of an Iranian nuke would still invite nuclear retalliation on Iran. We don't buy any arguement that Iran lost a nuke or got one stolen. The deployment of an Iranian nuke by whatever party would have been only possible if Tehran gave the order.

Even if they had a huge army posted on the other side of the channel and Britain was completely defenseless we still wouldn't launch the nukes, they know its a hallow threat.
