For Blackleaf:
There are many stories of a legendary man named Arthur who was either a King of the Generals or a General of the Kings (each shire having it's own "King"). I think the first ones published were a couple hundred years after his existence. There are also arguments on the name and Nationality (some say he was half Roman).
Dragon stories have also abounded around the globe. Dragon comes from the word "Drago" which means to drag it's tail around thus being a snake or some other reptilian critter.
I always had a theory of what animal, of that time, could have been called a Dragon and verbal descriptions of it later became very enhanced. I was very pleased to see that Hal Foster (whom I met at a Comics con once) in one of his Sunday issues of his Prince Valiant comic strip also matched my theory.
Val, a Viking Prince serving under King Arthur and married to a blond Greek Queen Alita, had to kill a dragon. Another knight was with him at the time and both being on horseback and armed with lances were able to slay the ugly, multi-identified beast.
A large (or giant) Salt Water Crocodile. The fossil of this 40 foot long giant was found in the North African desert:
