Al Qaeda calls Queen 'enemy of Islam' in video
CTV.ca News Staff
Queen Elizabeth is "one of the severest enemies of Islam," al Qaeda said this summer in a video issued after the July 7 transit bombings in London.
Ayman al-Zawahiri, second-in-command to al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, describes the Queen as being ultimately responsible for Britain's "crusader laws" and calls her an enemy of Muslims, the Sunday Times of London reported.
The newspaper said it obtained the full 27-minute video, which it said is posted on secure jihadist websites. London-based Saudi extremist Muhammad al-Massari had the video on his website Tajdeed, it added.
Mohammad Sidique Khan, the ringleader of the July 7 bombings, made some inflammatory statements on the video, the paper said.
He urged Muslims to take part in jihad, seek martyrdom -- and ignore moderate Islamic leaders.
"Our so-called scholars of today are content with their Toyotas and semi-detached houses," Khan is quoted as saying.
"It is very clear, brothers and sisters, that the path of jihad and the desire for martyrdom is embedded in the holy prophet and his beloved companions.
"By preparing ourselves for this kind of work, we are guaranteeing ourselves for paradise and gaining the pleasure of Allah.
"And by turning our back on this work, we are guaranteeing ourselves humiliation and the anger of Allah. Jihad is an obligation on every single one of us, men and women."
Khan died in the attacks, which killed 52 commuters.
Sir Iqbal Sacranie, secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain, denounced Khan's statements as a "perverse interpretation of Islam.
"The victims of Sidique Khan were innocent people ... It's clearly inciteful. It's trying to incite people to commit murder," he said.
MI5, Britain's domestic intelligence agency, told Buckingham Palace al Qaed had specifically named the Queen. However, her security had already been upgraded after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
