Cool, Sports Cities sprouting up everywhere.

LAHORE ? Founder of cricket in the UAE and leading sports patron and financier Abdurrehman Bukhatir and Punjab government have inked a deal to erect a $500 million (Rs30 billion) sports city in Lahore.

The project, Pakistan?s first, and the biggest ever sports investment in the country by a foreign company, envisages state of the art sports facilities like training and lodging academies in football, cricket, golf and tennis besides constructing stadia and courses for the various sports.

Bukhatir met Punjab Chief Minister Ch. Pervaiz Elahi here at CM house before announcing the details and signing the MoU with provincial sports secretary Arshad Bhatti.

?People of Lahore are sports loving and Lahore is a beautiful city that?s why we have decided to build a sports city here,? said Bukhatir at the signing ceremony attended by a number of Punjab ministers and CM Elahi.

?I believe sports city will help in raising the overall standard of games in Pakistan and players will be trained at early level under a long-term plan,? said Bukhatir.

Under the agreement, Punjab government will provide land and basic infrastructure for the city while the facilities will be built by Bukhatir-owned company.

?With the establishment of sports city Pakistan and the city of Lahore will jump in the forefront of the strong candidates to host the international events,? said Punjab CM Pervaiz Elahi at the MOU signing ceremony.

?The sports city will not only provide international facilities for the athletes but it will also help create thousands of jobs,? said Elahi.

?Moreover,? the CM said, ?the project will help create an image of enlightened and moderate country for Pakistan.?

The site and the modalities to establish the sports city including time-frame of completion will be worked out between Mr Bukhatir and Punjab government later. The project is second biggest UAE investment in Lahore after a Dubai-based group announced to set-up Shaikh Zayed entertainment complex in the city at the cost of $1 billion. The complex will have five star hotels and multi-plex cinemas. At the MoU signing ceremony Mr Bukhatir was accompanied by Ten Sports channel director Zahid Noorani.
