After a dull forecast for Iran's 2013 Presidential elections there has now actually been a spark of life thrown into it over the past few days with the reformist block and many 'green movement' supporters throwing their lot behind Hassan Rouhani, who ironically is the only mullah in the race but is the most 'moderate' and 'reform' minded of all the candidates. Rouhani's campaign has adopted the color purple as a rallying point, which seems like a hint and throw back to the 2009 'green movement'. In the Islamic Republic they say there is only a choice between bad and worse, and for pro-democracy and reform minded Iranians, he is the the best among the worst.. These elections are neither free nor fair, but i understand fully the sentiments of those who want to give a protest vote against the hardliners by voting Rouhani rather than boycotting.
When it comes major foreign policy confrontations between Iran and the West, none of the candidates are likely to be able to take Iran in another direction than the one it has been on since at least 2005.
