A new vehicle powered by a single horse

naturmobil08.jpgGood thing Portland kept all of those old-timey horse rings on city sidewalks.

Iranian inventor Abdolhadi Mirhejazi has unveiled his Naturmobil -- "the ultimate environmentally friendly vehicle" powered by ... wait for it ... a single horse on a treadmill.

Mirhejazi says his high-breed creation travels on paved roads at a top speed of about 50 mph, with the treadmill charging batteries for when Flicka needs a break.

I don't know. It looks like a pain in the ("neeeigh!") to park.

I cannot imagine a more inefficient way to poke along at slow speeds. Consider:

The horse must be fed, cared for, doctored and medicated on occasion. The horse must be housed when not at work. All of these consume energy and resources. The feed alone - think of the petrol used to sow, reap, bundle, and deliver the hay. The energy-consuming activities of the human to simply care for the horse would be vastly greater than a 1 HP petrol engine delivering comparable work to the horse.

Essentially, in a pyramid above the horse, you have a vast array of wasteful activities and products to keep it going.

The alternative, a 1 HP engine, can easily be concealed in the palm of both hands. Above that, you have a smidge of gasoline. Such a small engine will not take much, and the infrastructure to deliver that gasoline and oil is infinitely streamlined when compared to the horse necessities.

If not a joke, it is another ill thought-out greenie "feel good" (and quite ridiculous) proposition.

When the horse breaks down you can eat it.
