Isolated’ student held after college shooting
Gunman opens fire with high-powered rifle in Va. classroom; motive unclear

Prince William County Police Department / AP Jason Michael Hamilton, 20, of Manassas, Va., was being held without bond on charges including attempted murder.

updated 1 hour, 45 minutes ago
WOODBRIDGE, Va. - In a scene reminiscent of other school shootings, a Northern Virginia Community College teacher spotted a weapon and ducked to avoid gunfire. Students ran from the classroom building while others barricaded themselves inside, piling desks in front of doors.

This time, though, no one was hurt.

Police said Jason Michael Hamilton, 20, opened fire in a classroom Tuesday with a high-powered rifle, but did not hit anyone and surrendered peacefully in a hallway. He was later charged with attempted murder and discharging a firearm in a school zone and was being held without bond.

A neighbor described Hamilton as a loner who lived in his family's basement in an affluent new subdivision near the school in Woodbridge, about 25 miles south of Washington, D.C. Two police cars were outside his home and wouldn't let reporters close.

Whether Hamilton had hired an attorney was not immediately clear; neither was a motive for the shooting.

Prince William County Police spokeswoman Kim Chinn said the unidentified teacher ducked when the student opened fire.

"When she saw the gun, she hit the floor," Chinn said.

In a classroom nearby, biology professor Miriam St. Clair said she heard a loud noise.

"It sounded like a desk fell over and we heard another loud pop, we knew it was a gunshot," said St. Clair, of McLean, Va.

When St. Clair looked out the window, she saw students fleeing. The professor told her students to get inside the classroom and they piled about 20 desks against a door that didn't have a lock. About 2 1/2 hours later, a SWAT team came and told them it was safe.

"We were very frightened," said St. Clair, 58.

Police spokeswoman Sharon Richardson said officers responded about 2:40 p.m. to an "active shooter" following reports of a gunman in the main administration building.

The college enacted its emergency lockdown and later issued a statement saying all Woodbridge classes were canceled. Some students, faculty and staff were sent to a nearby high school.

All classrooms are in one building and the students were in lockdown until about 5:30 p.m. Swat teams went into each classroom during the lockdown, said Chinn, who didn't know how many students were inside or how many shots were fired.

One of the suspect's neighbors said Hamilton's parents moved to the subdivision about three years ago and he sometimes saw the suspect jogging alone, or with his mother.

"He's always by himself, he's always isolated," said Daren Edwards, 38.

Northern Virginia Community College wasn't far from where I lived. What I don't understand is that it took the SWAT team 2 1/2 hours to get there? I read and re-read the article and it didn't say how long it took for the police to get there!

to my understanding, which might be wrong, it did not take the swat-team 2,5 hours to arrive, but 2,5 hours to reach the mention room since they went from room to room checking each one, which even on a small campus can take some time.

I wasn't quite sure how to read it. That would make more sense! But like Crooks said, no one was hurt, and that is the best news!

          What is it with Virginia?

Also, how did he get a "high powered" rifle to the classroom without looking suspicious?

                Google told me:

Generally, a "high-powered rifle" is any modern rifle designed to fire a bullet at high velocity from a hollow cylindrical metal shell by means of igniting a primer and detonating a smokeless power charge contained within. Exactly where a "rifle" becomes a "high-powered rifle" has never been definitively established.

Clearly rifles chambered for the .30/30, the .30/06, the .270 Winchester, and the .308-- which are designed for hunting medium to big game and/or military use--are high-powered rifles. Even smaller rounds such as the .243 Winchester, the .222 and the .22 hornet are generally so classified. Alternatively, .22 rimfires are generally not considered high-powered rifles, nor are rifles designed to fire handgun rounds such as the .357 magnum and the .44 magnum.
Does that mean it is simply a hunting rifle?

That's what the cops are saying.

You have to remember the "media" generally doesn't know jack shit about guns. Anything that looks scary is an "assault rifle" and anything that doesn't look like an "assault rifle" and is not a 22 is a "high powered rifle."

Reporters and gun facts are like oil and water. Most rifles are pretty darned high-powered no matter which way you slice it, and I wouldn't trust 'em to know the difference between an FN-FAL and a pump .22 anyway.

That wouldn't work. The kindergarten is too far from the university campus.

Accoring to the news, a rifle used to committ assault is an assault rifle. It makes perfect sense! :))

Va. student’s rifle jammed after 2 shots

WOODBRIDGE, Va. - A community college student was upset about his grades when he walked into a classroom and fired two shots at his professor before his new rifle jammed, police said Wednesday.

Jason M. Hamilton, 20, was unable to continue shooting at mathematics professor Tatyana Kravchuk, who ducked behind a desk and was not hit, Prince William County police Maj. Ray Colgan said. No one was injured.

"Probably what prevented a further tragedy was that the gun jammed," Colgan said.

Wow...and to think that this was all about some bad grades he got from his professor! Maybe working in a school is not such a good idea after all!
