  • Used gun barrels

When a battleship has a worn out gun barrel replaced, what happens to the old one? Do they somehow sleeve it? I dug around for quite some time now but can't find any info on that.

In most cases you will find, the gun liner is removed and replaced that is when they were still in service. The gun is reassembled and tested at facilities like Dalhgren. There were still gun barrels at Philadelphia and other places up until the reactivation in the early 1980's. Many were scrapped and cut up after they were removed from service however there are still a few around and Dalhgran still has quite a collection and some decorating the outside of museums.

      Used gun barrels

The French chopped the barrel off one of its later BB guns and used the breech to make artificial diamonds. An up-market version of swords into plough shares.

They should have just made the diamonds in the first place and saved themselves alot of time and money as neither of their two BB's saw much of anything besides the dockyards and a refit here in the US.:))
