2009年2月10日，外交部亚洲司负责人奉命就传日本在钓鱼岛海域常驻可搭载直升机巡视船事向日本驻华使 馆官员提出严正交涉。

　　该负责人表示，据日本媒体报道，日本海上保安厅2月1日起派遣可搭载直升机的PLH型巡视船常驻钓鱼岛 海域，加强对钓鱼岛的“警备体制”。这一报道如属实，将是对中国领土主权的严重侵犯，中方对此表示强烈关切 。

　　该负责人强调，钓鱼岛及其附属岛屿自古以来就是中国的固有领土，中国对此拥有无可争辩的主权。如日方在 钓鱼岛问题上采取升级举动，中方将不得不作出强烈反应，日方对此应有清醒认识。

Well if a disputed territory exists that can cause such harsh diplomatic comments, one should be mindful, conflicts over such issues are common to the region.

I thought it was pretty obvious. PRC cant afford to rile Japan. All it takes is 2 JMSDF subs to ruin the PRC economy, so I dont see the PRC doing anything remotely resembling "strong action" over these islands.

I dont see the PRC escalating anything with Japan, largely because it will lead the USN/ABCA to have to take sides.

Even if they go it alone, 2 JMSDF subs would just about be enough to block the primary PRC sea ports GZ/HKSAR/MACAU/Shanghai. Korea will probably oblige in watching the northern ports like Ningbo, but all it takes is for the importation of water to be disrupted for a crisis, and most of that happens only in one or two ports. Heck, even interrupting 30% of the water importation would be enough.

Not to mention that Japan buys a lot of doodads from the PRC..

Unlikely there will be any "strong action"...
