  • Iranian military convoy rocked by mystery explosion

After coming across this news i've searched around a bit for more information about this incident, but i havent found much. I dont know whether to give any credit to this report, but in light of a couple of other suspicious explosions taking place within Iran this year i wont discount this news completely.

Iranian military convoy rocked by mystery explosion

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have launched an urgent inquiry after a mysterious explosion wrecked a military convoy in Tehran, killing at least fifteen people and injuring scores more.

The explosion took place in the Tehran suburb of Khavarshahar as the military convoy left a munitions' warehouse controlled by the Revolutionary Guards. According to reports received by Western officials, the convoy was taking a consignment of military equipment to Hizbollah, the Shia Muslim militia Iran supports in southern Lebanon, when the explosion occurred.

Senior Revolutionary Guard commanders immediately imposed a news black-out following the explosion, even though it could be heard throughout the capital Tehran, and no details of the incident have so far appeared in the Iranian media.

But Western officials yesterday said they had received reports that the explosion took place in Tehran on July 19, and that the Revolutionary Guards had launched an investigation into the causes of the blast.

"This was a massive explosion that was heard throughout Tehran," one official told the Daily Telegraph. "Even though lots of people were killed the Revolutionary Guards are trying to conceal what really happened."

Iran is believed to have recently stepped up arms shipments to Hizbollah in preparation for any future armed confrontation with the West over its controversial nuclear enrichment programme.

The Revolutionary Guards' investigation into last weekend's explosion is understood to be looking into the possibility that it was caused by sabotage. Iran has suffered a number of unexplained explosions in recent months, including an explosion at a mosque in Shiraz, which had been holding a military exhibition, and another incident at a missile site that killed dozens of Iranian technicians.

Last month Seymour Hersh, the respected American investigative journalist, reported that US President George W Bush had authorised up to $400 million (£200 million) to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran to destabilise the regime.

It seems we'll never know as the government there is unlikely to reveal anything about the incident.

The Shiraz bombing a few months ago was too big of an attack to cover-up. But even then, contradictory information about the nature of the explosion continued to be sent out by officials.

perhaps it could be. I don't find it a stretch, that for political and propaganda reasons, the IRI would keep the entire incident covered up as a means to keep Iranian citizens believing their governments BS about invicibility against Israel.
If they knew Israelis were already taking out targets in Iran with impugnity the population would be in an uproar.

The Shiraz mosque bombing sounds more like something Al-Qaeda or an affiliate would undertake as the Imam there was apparently outspoken against Sunnis, as well as typical rants about Jews and Americans.

I doubt we'll ever know but I'm curious as to how many Iranian-Jews are working for Israel within Iran.

Following up on the Tehran Explosion story

There is only one source for this story: a person known only to the Daily Telegraph's correspondant Con Coughlan.
When asked to substantiate the story, or retract it, the DT persists in its position: "We are therefore entirely satisfied that the explosion occurred precisely as he reported it."
The Telegraph report stated that the explosion "could be heard throughout the capital Tehran". My own enquiries from friends and acquaintances who live there do not confirm this.
(Other people active on this site may wish to check with their contacts.)
Even supposing that there were some foundation to the report, given the number of foreign residents and visitors in Tehran, open phone and email links, etc. etc. is it reasonable to accept that any attempt such as: "Senior Revolutionary Guard commanders immediately imposed a news black-out following the explosion" would be successful? Indeed, such attempts would surely provide material for further interesting news reports.
The fundamental question is: what editorial objectives are the Daily Telegraph - "Britain's best-selling quality daily" - pursuing by publishing such questionable material as accurate news?

Lots. Wikipedia says 25 000 but isn't sure. There are pretty big jewish communities with their own religious sites in major cities. Iranian leaders may talk about burning Israel but Jews within the country are treated fine, they have rights guaranteed under their constitution.

Which means plenty of them must be spies. I'm sure they're watched pretty carefully.

We had one of the largest Jewish group in the middle east, but their population have been declining as they have left us ...

                  According to this website ...

                  http://www.simpletoremember.com/vita...ion.htm#_ftn20

It was about 11,000 in 2001 .. I think it is inaccurate

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persian_Jews#cite_note-1

This website (above link) put them at 25,000 today, about 80,000 in 1979 and about 140,000-150,000 when Israel was created in '48

Most of them left either for United States or Isreal

I do not think any of the Iranian jews are spying for Israel. If Isreal has spies in Iran, it would be in the form of an Iranian jew that went to Israel and came back.

Of those that chose to stay in Iran, I would be very hesitant to call them spy.
