Malaysian govt refuses to meet Pak delegation

    By our correspondent

ISLAMABAD: Malaysian Interior Ministry officials refused to meet the Pakistan government delegation that went there to hold negotiations on import of manpower from Pakistan.

The Senate Standing Committee on Labour, Manpower and Overseas Pakistani was told that the Malaysian government was pursuing its trade interests and giving importance to workers from India instead of Pakistan
    .

The committee meeting was presided over by Naeem Chattha and attended by senators including Enwar Baig. The disclosure was made by top officials of Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment, and Overseas Employment Corporation.

They said despite their best efforts, the Labour Ministry officials were not entertained by the Malaysian interior ministry. The committee members asked the labour ministry officials to inform them about the much publicised MoU signed between Pakistan and Malaysia for hiring of Pakistani labour.

The ministry officials disclosed that the MoU was signed only to make Pakistan eligible to send its manpower to Malaysia as its name was not on the approved list of countries from where Malaysia import the manpower. There was no mention of number of manpower to be imported as earlier claimed by ministers.

The meeting was told that after the signing of the MoU not a single person was sent to Malaysia so far as the Malaysian government was not keen to import manpower from Pakistan. It said keeping the discouraging response of the Malaysian ministry, the government sent its own delegation to convince them to import labour from Pakistan.
But no progress was made on this count.

The Labour Ministry officials observed that the Malaysian labour ministry was not inclined to import manpower from Pakistan. When a senator asked whether the Malaysian government was not importing manpower from Pakistan because of alleged Pak links to terrorists, the officials denied it. However, they told the meeting "we should not deal with Malaysia only because that it was a Muslim country".

Exporting manpower is a sick method of earning foreign exchange, I can't believe we've got government ministers trying to sell the idea to countries.

Parasitism - They won't follow the economic policies that will enable job creation in Pakistan itself - instead they will beg others to do for them what they are unwilling to do for themselves.

        Tarek,

Jobs shall be created in Pakistan.

I appreciate the apprehension that things are not fast enough, but Rome was not built in a day.

The depravation and devastation experienced by Pakistan ever since that lunatic Islamist Zia cannot be wiped out in a day.

From a breadbasket case and nearly decalred a failed state, Pakistan is now looking at 6% growth. That is not something that is a child's play. It is a good and should I say, a great beginning.

In the interim, what's wrong in exporting labour? At least, they will earn an honest day's pay rather than turning Islamist fundamentals. In fact, all those guys who left their native shores and are abroad and in good respectable jobs are also 'exported labour', if you wish.

If these sophisticated exported labour is fine with all, then what's wrong with less educated but skilled labour going to earn an honest day's bread for themselves and their kith and kin back home? God helps those who help themselves. So, if they want to go out and help themselves rather than add to the poverty all around, I think that is laudable.

If these skill labour exported are a sign of parasitism, what about the educated ones, who even settle down and become Americans and Englishmen?

I find the logic a trifle hyprocritical.

In so far as the Malaysian govt, the Indian media tells us that they favour Pakistan.

Is there a competition amongst the Indian and Pakistan media to show Malaysia dislikes their country in favour of the other? ;)

Yea, and plus its an easy way to generate remittances that is supposedly financing Pakistan's economic revival (when its actually just lining the pockets of the administration.)

I think its more "playing the victim" more than anything else.

              Ray

Exporting labour is problematic in the sense that it is used as a kind of safety value for the politicians -- ROme was not built in a day but Pakistan have had more than 60 years - instead we have continued to make excuses for ourselves - it's not acceptable.

More than anything else Pakistanis need jobs in Pakistan - one must ask how it is that jobs exist elsewhere but no tin Pakistan? Which policies have countries like Malaysia been following that generate such large numbers of jobs and why has nto Pakistan been following the same? Or at least why have they been following policies that do not create jobs in the numbers required?

Yeah, these are important question we must face. the more people aree exported, the more the parasite culture is given crediblity and acceptance and ofcourse that means we as Pakistanis end up net losers.
