      Morning, Sir,

      In my experinece, there is a wealth of primary source material available via the Jihadist's own websites.

      Too, alot of "terror manuals" and communiques can be downloaded from the P2P networks.

      Furthermore, if you comb through the various think tank websites, you can find all sorts of interesting analysis though vet is the operative word, naturally.

      Finally, lets not forget our old friend al Jazeera. Good place to start for all sorts of amusing research.

      I would be more specific, but my big list of links is not backed up and sitting on a machine with a bad motherboard

      Regards,

        Fourth Generation Governance--Sheikh Tamimi Defends the Islamic State of Iraq

        This commentary analyzes the most comprehensive jihadi defense of the al-Qa'ida-led Islamic State of Iraq, which was released by the ISI's official media outlet on January 7, 2007.

        On October 15, 2006 Al-Qa’ida in Iraq (AQI) and its allies declared an independent Islamic State across a swath of Western Iraq. The Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) was widely scorned by Western counterterrorism experts, many of whom rightly concluded that the ISI would never be capable of developing the material and bureaucratic infrastructure widely expected of a modern state.

        The most comprehensive defense, entitled Informing the People About the Birth of the Islamic State of Iraq, was authored by Uthman Bin Abd al-Rahman al-Tamimi and released by Furqan Media, the ISI’s official media development unit. This book is significant for two reasons. Firstly, it delineates the ideological schism within the jihadi movement over the ISI’s existence. Secondly, Tamimi defends the ISI by combining modern globalization theory with Koranic and hadith-based justifications to fundamentally redefine what a modern Islamic nation-state should be.
        You can find the .pdf at this site if you don't want to download here; additionally, you can download the underlying document, "Informing the People About the Birth of the Islamic State of Iraq" by Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Tamimi, at the CTC website, but you must register to receive access.

            Here's a written statement from some testimony today by the head of the Combatting Terrorism Center.

            In this testimony, I will first describe how violent extremists think about how to use the internet to spread their radical ideology; second I will discuss some of the ways these extremists use the internet to meet their goals and finally I will recommend more effective ways to combat extremist efforts on the internet. The specific recommendations which I will explain in detail at the conclusion of my testimony are to:

            1) Establish and support dedicated programs to translate and analyze jihadi strategic texts that are proliferated online;

            2) Exploit vulnerabilities and divisions identified by the terrorists themselves online;

            3) Harness more diverse communities of expertise and bring greater resources to the fight using similar web enabled techniques developed by terrorist’s themselves.
            See attached file or link to read more.

              Al-Qa'ida's (mis)Adventures in the Horn of Africa

              The CTC's latest report on AQ.

              Al-Qa'ida's (mis)Adventures in the Horn of Africa

              Combating Terrorism Center: Horn of Africa Report

              The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point is pleased to present the report, Al-Qa’ida's (mis)Adventures in the Horn of Africa. Based on a collection of al-Qa’ida documents recently released from the Department of Defense’s Harmony Database, this report provides an analysis of al-Qa’ida’s early operations in the Horn of Africa. These documents, captured in the course of operations supporting the Global War on Terror, have never before been available to the academic and policy community. Al-Qa’ida's (mis)Adventures in the Horn of Africa includes a theoretically informed analysis of al-Qa’ida’s successes and failures while operating in Somalia between 1992 and 1994. Case studies on Somalia and Kenya provide a historical and current analysis of al-Qa’ida’s operations in the Horn. Our theoretical analysis and case studies inform policy recommendations on how the U.S. and its coalition partners might address the threat of terrorism in failed and weak states within the Horn of Africa and globally. We have provided brief summaries of each of the released documents with full text translations in English and the original document in Arabic. We hope this report will serve as a useful resource in our collective efforts to better understand and combat al-Qa’ida and its affiliated movements.

                  Folks,

                  The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point is pleased to provide you a link to our latest report, Cracks in the Foundation: Leadership Schisms in al-Qa'ida from 1989-2006 which can be accessed at:

                  Combating Terrorism Center

                  This report analyzes the history of al-Qa'ida's internal and long-running debates over the strategies and larger goals of the jihadi movement. The report draws on recently released documents from the Department of Defense's Harmony Database. Many of these documents, captured in the course of operations supporting the Global War on Terror, have never before been available to the academic and policy community. Brief summaries of each of the newly released Harmony documents and their full texts can be accessed via hyperlinks within the report, both in their original Arabic and in English.

                  We hope that Cracks in the Foundation's account of the ongoing struggle between different factions among al-Qa'ida's leaders, as well as its specific recommendations for effectively exploiting the weaknesses arising from these internal struggles, will serve as a useful resource in your efforts to better understand and combat al-Qa'ida and its affiliated movements.

                  Best wishes

                  James
