Venus transit after 122 years

RAWALPINDI: The man on Earth will be able to observe the passage of the Venus in front of the Sun on June 8, 2004 after 122 years.
The last time the Venus transit took place was in 1882 and none of the persons who witnessed that transit is alive today.
The rare celestial event has historical significance. The scientists used their observations of earlier transits of Venus to measure the distance between the Earth and the Venus, between the Earth and the Sun, and between different planets in the solar system.
These observations also produced information about the Venus size and its orbit, besides the first evidence of the presence of atmosphere on the planet.
The transit will be visible from Europe, Africa, Asia, and eastern parts of America. In some countries, it will be seen for short period and in others it will be witnessed for full time. The Venus chasers from those countries where it will not be seen are preparing to head for those states where the uncommon event will uncover itself. The transit will last for over six hours.
Fortunately Pakistan, besides Iran, Afghanistan and India, is among the best locations in the world to witness the complete Venus transit. Karachi, Hyderabad, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi are listed among the cities of the world from where the rare astronomical event can be watched.
