That year, Spain, Mauritania, and Morocco signed an agreement to split the territory between Mauritania and Morocco.
Polisario rejected the agreement, and a guerilla war was started against Morocco and Mauritania.
The Mauritanians abandoned their occupation of their portion of Western Sahara soon after a military coup in 1978. Mauritania still exercises a claim to the region, but the claim is now dormant.
That leaves Morocco as the sole occupying power in Western Sahara.
Algeria supports the Polisario Front, and Polisario conducts attacks on Moroccan forces in Western Sahara from bases in Algeria.
