Malthus's theory is starting to come to mind...

malthus's theory holds less true today than it did 150 years ago, what with exponential growth of food from technology. in any case, as we see with most of the western industrialized world, once nations cross a certain GDP barrier birth rates start plummeting. just the natural order of things.

Are you implying that Africa is going to self-regulate it's population while we continually artifically boost their ability to mass reproduce?

africa will self-regulate its population once the respective economies of the region go up.

actually, pres. bush has tied in the level of aid support to the level of good government; that is a good idea (if only the said aid wasn't tied up in congress). by encouraging this (and if it follows through: the preliminary data on this is fairly good, actually), it is possible to prevent both starvation ("artificially boost their ability to mass reproduce") and bolster the economy, leading to greater self-regulation of population.

women choose to have less children once economic and education opportunities for their children go up.

                Which makes absolutely NO sense.

Heh, that may be the most ringing indictment of the female thought process i've ever seen.

                LOL....

might not make any sense to you, but demographic data proves that to be the case.

the idea is, if you know that your kids have a high chance of dying, it's better to have lots of them to ensure that one or two make it.

once you know that the chance of dying is low, then it is better to concentrate all the resources on one or two to ensure that they not only make it, but do well in the world.

we see this in the natural world, as well. that's why insects (easily killed) reproduce in the thousands and millions, while primates do not.

Statistics show that developed countries have lower growth rates. There's no use giving them food. Helping them set up their own infrastructure will serve better in the long run than just giving them food aid all the time.

i agree. at the same time, though, giving food aid is of such ridiculously low cost to us (in the US, we PAY farmers not to grow food), that we can give out food aid as well as helping them set up the necessary infrastructure. given that it takes 15-20 years for africa to "mass reproduce" and thus "waste" the food aid, doing both in conjunction isn't a bad idea.

The more you have in a CIVILIZED society the more likely they will ALL have a much lower quality of living. If you can't afford to feed and house the kids you already got, having more is NOT the friggin' solution!

I mean wtf, this is not rocket science.

The more food we give them the higher the death toll will ultimately be because they will continue to artifically live beyond their means and their population will continue to explode until even WE can't feed them all.

At that point in time, the scale of death will be truly mindboggling.

Yep lets just kill all the Chinese, Indians and Africans... hell that will lower the world population by a couple billion and free up a lot of land...
