Statquo and OOE Club: Canadian Politics

Same thing as before. CANUSM exempt. Everything else open war. COMPROMISE! Carney gets elected!

What happens after the election is Opps, too late for Poilievre and the Conservatives.

Guess we'll see Wednesday when his threat kicks in! Or, will he come with another backtrack?
Should remember what happened to the boy who cried wolf too often!!!

We didn't get hit. Carney should be kissing Trump's feet now. The election is now his. Carney's behind the scene talks (or the impression of it) worked.

And Polievere refusal to call Trump states the PC is out of the loop.

Five more Liberal years.

Haven't heard how Canada fared out of the new round of tariffs. Does anybody know? (Australia got hit with a 'generous' 10% general tariff BTW. Trump must 'like' us.)

I wonder if the world could start by putting 25% tariff on US civilian aircraft imports. Not spare parts just new air frame orders. If nothing else the Airbus Board would be popping Champaign corks. Boeing exec's? Not so much. Might as well return the pain Trump is causing Bomardier.

Carney did order a review of the F-35 program, hinting that he might cancel 72 birds (16 has already been paid for by iron clad contract). Portugal did something similar. Carney hinted that European birds can make up the difference.

IMV, nothing is going to change. We're going ahead with the F-35 program full 88 birds. It makes zero sense to have 2 different birds who have totally different training, logistical, and doctrinal needs. Translation: more money than what's been allocated.

There might be a solution. Offer to sell/arrange the transfer of the F-35s you've already paid for (at a slight discount) to one or more of the countries that are already waiting on future deliveries or alternately back to the US Air Force and then go European. Trump might say 'no', but could he stop it from happening?

No can-do. Washington DC got the go-no-go on all American based weapons transfers. Australian F-18s needed Washington DC's approval to be sold to Canada. Canada already backed out once. Hence, LOCKEED-MARTIN made it an iron clad contract that Canada will take delivery of the first 16 F-35s. The batch afterwards is still an open question but L-M has increased Canadian production rights as incentive.

Lastly, the bird that makes most sense if the F-35 is TO BE abandoned is the F-18 SUPERBUG. Going European requires TOO MUCH doctrinal change.

Canada has an air power doctrine? Has anyone told Ottawa? Only asking because based on the past few years?

Looks like Carney's Liberals are going to win a majority. The PCs fucked up. Canadians were looking at a nationalistic campaign. Be Canadian! Polivire could have campaigned on increased defence budget but no, he went for a tax cut that Carney already did.

The important thing about a Carney win ... the Western Provinces don't like it.

Well the Tories should've won...and got bottled by the President down south. Poilievre's strategy was talking non-stop about the economy. When you have tariffs and the potential shutdown of trade, the economy is no longer a domestic issue, it becomes a foreign policy issue. Here he was completely unprepared. The apologists are going to blame Trump, but I think Jenni Byrne as far as being a political strategist really comes off bad from this election.

My two cents elsewhere:

Kind of wonder whether if the Tories do lose tonight, Poilievre is kept on as leader. In the event of a Liberal Party with more seats, it means the caucus remaining would be more Prairies-dominated, and the Conservative Party uses a parliamentary law that allows the caucus to overthrow the leader (which is how O’Toole was thrown out and Poilievre came to lead the party). Any kind of leadership race I can potentially see devolving into a MAGA vs. MCGA (Make Canada Great Again) race, where MCGA could be led by Rob Ford or a Rob Ford type. Not sure who would lead MAGA, it’s not going to be Maxime Bernier who is persona non grata in Conservative Party circles, but could be someone of the same political vein. (A Danielle Smith type?)

I don’t think such a race occurring would be good for Canadian conservatives. I can see the decision being made to not oust Poilievre and keep him around even if he performed as a busted flush, simply to avoid this leadership race at this point in time.

Damn! Liberals could scrape a majority. Looks like the minor party vote collapsed & largely headed to the Liberals.

Carney has picked the perfect time to be a boring technocrat - looks like a safe harbour compared to the manbaby running America. Obviously he'll need to do more than just posture at Trump to govern, but at least he will have the opportunity.

Was thinking of holding my nose and voting for PP, before Jr resigned and Trump started his antics down south. An amazing change in fortune for the Liberals in just a couple of months. Voted for Carney with hope and some pride as a Canadian. I think he is the right man for these perilous times and wish him the best of luck.

Looks like the Liberals will fall just short of a majority, still have an outside chance if a few close races fall their way.

Interestingly Poilievre seems to be in some danger of losing his own seat, quite ironic for some one almost certain to be the Prime Minister just a few months ago.

He's certainly pushed his credentials as the person best placed to stand up to Trump. The trouble is (A) Trump and/or his staffers will have seen/heard him do this (and will brief the orange haired narcissist accordingly) & (B) The US holds the stronger economic hand. We'll see soon enough if he can deliver on his promise.

I've just a bystander but I noticed how Alberta and Saskatchewan went almost 100% Conservative. Remind me of Montana and Wyoming here.
