I'm surprised you say Kitty Hawk is still in service. I last set foot on it around 1993 at North Island and at the time it didn't strike me as being in really good shape. Apparently it must have been otherwise it still wouldn't be floating around.

I still remember when JFK came down to San Diego to tour the Kitty Hawk.

Shes set to decom in 2008. And to be replaced by CVN73 George Washington as forward deployment in Japan. First time a US nuclear carrier will be stationed in Japan ever.

My pop remembers Kittyhawk's launching in Camden NJ. He told me they all went atop the roof of Westinghouses turbine shops at lunchtime to see her steam down the river on her trials back in the day. He also told me they couldnt put all of her antennas on until she got down to Virginia because of the bridge clearence along the Delaware river.

Hey arent you and Mr. L. supposed to be doing a field trip somewhere out in the reserve fleet these days?;)

RAL's_pal? probably wouldn't set foot on another Navy ship even if you paid him in Vegas casino chips :biggrin:

I don't work for or with cRusty. I can't think of anything more depressing than going up to Suisun Bay to see the rusting hulks of many of the ships I worked on.

As for cRusty, he's a lot like cough syrup.... ok in small doses, but you don't want to overdo it...... :biggrin: (that should flush him out of hiding if he's back in town).

I might, if there was one really close. I certainly wouldn't drive or fly a long distance to visit one. I'd rather go down to engineering to look around instead of walking around the guns.

Of course, there was the time the New Jersey put that 16" round right over the top of the fishing trawler that wandered by during the gun trials..... that was fun watching the whole boat shudder. If those guys didn't have to immediately have to change their shorts, either they didn't bring an extra pair or they weren't human.

I'm BAAAAACK. Yes, it is depressing seeing all those ships out there. Almost all now are auxilliaries because they got rid of all the cruisers a few months ago. Don Herr asked me to find out where his old ship, the Jason, was and I found it and photographed her for him.

And you're right about the cough syrup. I never thought of myself that way, but sounds accurate enough.

Yeah, I liked that one too. That dumb boat was wandering in wondering what all the noise was about (we were test firing the guns of Turret III). Probaby wanted to take some pictures. We blasted him with warnings from our whistle and apparently contacted him by radio to keep a straight and level course up our port side. Though the gun was about a 35 degree elevation, lobbed it right ahead of his bow.

No one ever really knows how these things will go in advance, but i would remind you that once they're out of sqn service, which is being done now, those 10 planes are really just an abstract that will not(or cannot) be recalled unless the Shiit really hits the fan.

I see what your saying. Though Pima and others do a pretty good job of reintroducing aircraft back to the front line.
