Passed away at the age of 78. Native of San Francisco. Had many a friend who were Dead Heads. Me, I was kind of Ok but didn't grasp what exactly they saw. However, I did make my own tie dye t-shirts back in 68. Listened to some comments by Sammy Hagar who was born in Salinas three days before Weir on October 13, 1947. Actually, what is more unnerving for me is the fact that friends and landmark people in my life, around the same age as me or a little older, are now passing away. Third one I learned about in the last two weeks as I learned someone I knew in the Philippines for 32 years, and American pathologist, passed away. Talk about looking at your own mortality square in the mirror.

Can't say I was much of a Dead fan - some OK stuff up to 1970ish & then decades of noodling. That said, I can certainly recognise their importance to music & popular culture late 60s America. As a HUGE fan of that period I totally respect the contribution of Bob Weir, Jerry Garcia & the rest.

RIP man.

Aug 1986 a young Corporal of Marines has orders to Japan. Flights leave out of St Louis on Mon and Wed.

Orders has him leaving on the Wed flight. He sees that the Dead are playing in ST Louis on that very day.

So like a Dumbass he calls the Marine Liaison to see if he can get bumped to that next Monday. The MSgt was cool the first 5 min of the conversation, No problem, we do this all the time just need a little info then he asked if I was having a family emergency, having problems getting a flight to St Louis, ie What is the purpose of this extension request.

When I told him I wanted to go to the Dead Concert attitudes changed. Request denied. Along with a "hippie, Dope Smoking, unAmerican Commie music...... rant"

And for some strange reason, when I checked in at the desk that Wed afternoon. The MSgt was notified and he presented me with a specimen
cup and a MP escort to the nearest bathroom for a "Random" urinalysis.
