2026 American Political (ob-?)Scene

I've mostly been focused on what's been transpiring in Minneapolis, for obvious reasons (I live here).

Two other stories from the past few days.

Meanwhile victim's lawyers ask Judge to force a takedown of Epstein files due to disclosure, failure to redact, victims names. Majorly it seems.

I can't tell if the DOJ is that incompetent or if it was intentional?

Epstein victims’ lawyers ask judges to force takedown of released Epstein files, citing ‘thousands of redaction failures’

Lawyers representing victims of Jeffrey Epstein are asking judges to force the Justice Department to take down the millions of Epstein-related documents it has posted online, saying in a letter dated Sunday that the failure to properly redact victims’ information has triggered an “unfolding emergency.”

The letter, written by prominent Epstein victims’ lawyers Brittany Henderson and Brad Edwards and addressed to two federal judges in New York who are overseeing Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell’s cases, requests an “immediate judicial intervention” to address the fact that victims’ information was included in the millions of Epstein-related records that were released.

Henderson told CNN that the letter was sent to the judges. The letter is not yet available on the public court docket.

“Within the past 48 hours, the undersigned alone has reported thousands of redaction failures on behalf of nearly 100 individual survivors whose lives have been turned upside down by DOJ’s latest release,” Henderson and Edwards wrote to judges Richard Berman and Paul Engelmayer.

“There is no conceivable degree of institutional incompetence sufficient to explain the scale, consistency, and persistence of the failures that occurred —particularly where the sole task ordered by the Court and repeatedly emphasized by DOJ was simple: redact known victim names before publication,” they also wrote.

The lawyers list numerous examples of redaction errors that they’ve come across, such as one minor victim’s name allegedly being “revealed 20 times in a single document.” Once those mistakes were reported to the Justice Department, the department only fixed three of the errors, “leaving 17 instances still unpredicted as of this filing,” the lawyers wrote.

Other examples included one email that allegedly lists 32 underage victims “with only one name redacted and 31 left visible,” as well as FBI “302” forms with full first and last names of victims unredacted.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (probably seeing if they can say fake news and get away with it)

CNN reported on Friday that multiple survivors, including anonymous “Jane Doe” victims, were seeing their names and information throughout the files that were published.

Sunday’s letter also includes testimony from various anonymous “Jane Doe” victims who described receiving death threats and harassment from the media since the publication of the files.

One Jane Doe is quoted as saying: “The release of this information is not only profoundly distressing and retraumatizing, but it also places me and my child at potential physical risk.”

“DOJ cannot plausibly characterize this as error, negligence, or bureaucratic failure. The task was straightforward: take the list of known victims and redact those names everywhere they appear,” the lawyers wrote. “When DOJ believed it was ready to publish, it needed only to type each victim’s name into its own search function. Any resulting hit should have been redacted before publication. Had DOJ done that, the harm would have been avoided”

In a separate statement to CNN, Henderson said: “With every second that passes, additional harm is being caused to these women. They are scared, they are devastated, and they are begging for our government to protect them from further harm.”

What is Tulsi Gabbard doing at the FBI raid on Fulton County's voter records/ballots?

Let's ignore the fact for a moment there's no voter fraud in Fulton County. Their only failing, of course, was not trying to suppress and deny people the right to vote as hard as outlying Georgia counties.

Doesn't the National Security Act of 1947 make it illegal for her to be involved in this?

Trump has openly declared he has no need for international law and of course we've seen how he treats US law and the Constitution.

"Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me”

So, yeah, not much point in pointing out the laws he's broken, breaking and will break in the future.

At least, not as long as the former Republican Party holds a majority in the House and only a tiny handful of Republican Senators might vote to convict him.

Recall that after Trump incited a textbook insurrection to overturn the results of a free and fair election on January 6th, 17 Republicans were needed to convict him. Just 7 temporarily found their sense of law and order and voted to convict.

Today 20 Republicans would be needed, and there are only 3 of the original 7 still left in the Senate.

So, it follows that it would take something even worse than another illegal attempt at seizing power to maybe pry 20 Republicans away from his grip on the conservative wing of this country.

His Odiousness is suing the IRS (Budget: $11.5 billion) for $10 billion.

If he "wins" the administrative "negotiation," the government has an additional $10 billion of debt.

To manage the obviously ugly optics, I'm betting he will "donate" the money to "pay down the federal debt...by using the money to buy T-Bills (which he'll keep).

Make me change my mind.

I don't see a dedicated Epstein thread so I'll discuss this here.

The fall of Lord Mandelson: I followed British politics more closely during the time of the late Gordon Brown government, and Mandelson back then it was remarked by British journalists he had a ton of power in the decision-making of the Brown government for a person that left the Commons and went to the Lords. Also:

Mandelson's last email [to Epstein regarding Brown leaving office] was 16:02 British time.

Brown's resignation was public 19:19 British time.

Implies Mandelson leaked price-sensitive information to a Wall Street insider.

There's an email conversation making the rounds between Epstein and a contact of his with face-to-face contact Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson in 2011. The person asks about telling Andrew a message from Epstein and she mentions "all his phones are wired and tapped, except he doesn't know that"...

...anyone watched the Tosca scene in Quantum of Solace lately? It's great.

The hits keep on coming...

When Trump makes election threats, it’s best to believe him

When President Donald Trump looks like he’s gearing up to meddle in an election, still-raw history suggests he should be believed.

He showed yet again Monday he’s obsessing about the midterm elections — two days after a Democratic upset in a reliably Republican state Senate district in Texas offered another ominous sign for the GOP in November.

“The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over, we should take over the voting, the voting in at least many, 15 places.’ The Republicans ought to nationalize the voting,” Trump said. “We have states that are so crooked, and they’re counting votes. We have states that I won, that show I did

continue...

First the press. Then the Arts & Culture. Next the voting. Talk about a handbook for the aspiring authoritarian. Like the late 30's that concerned FDR. Para-military, political organizations, white supremacy, anti-tax, proto fascism all thriving from the economic disruption in 1929

My wife and I made new protest posters this weekend.
This time, I used artist's canvas: much more durable than cardboard, and I get this sinking feeling that I'm going to need to use this one over and over again.
*sigh*

Hands up anyone who has been surprised by the revalations from multiple Epstein files dumps about how chummy Noam Chomsky was with America's best known child trafficker?

If you put your hand up or know you should have it is past your bedtime. Tell mummy and daddy to monitor your internet usage more closely until you are better informed.

This guy has spent decades making excuses for evil VASTLY worse than this. No surprise he saw Epstein as a kindred spirit.

I do wish people could kind of step back and have an honest discussion of how power works. Everything Epstein, yeah obviously there's a ton of crime here, but ultimately the "why" on everything is down to the exercise of power. Why did Epstein do all this stuff? Power. Why did all these people involve themselves in this orbit knowing full well everything going on wrong? Ambition for power. Why do you take a picture of Prince Andrew on all fours above a girl either a teenager or not far removed? Kompromat, to use to aid your power. For random people involved that the American press doesn't really care about in this ranging from the Norwegian diplomatic couple that were the behind-the-scenes organizers of the Oslo Accords getting agreed to the First Lady of the U.S. Virgin Islands that made sure the girls' visas were approved.

The notion of intelligence connections to the Epstein ring are obvious and have been commented here and there on the sides of the conversation before. I doubt we'd ever find out for certain because the intel agencies are going to allow one ring to get breached but not a second, and if anyone got close they'd take the necessary steps to prevent or obfuscate the disclosure. (Mandelson going down like this is a surprise, but it's also not like Mandelson's career is "active" at the moment, so there's nothing future-related to be lost unless he discusses his contacts, and I doubt he would ever reach such a point.)

OMG.
They're coming for the economic policy wonks.

Interesting. It is illegal to wear a mask? What did they just say? Please once again so I know my ears weren't fooled! People, still to this day, come into my office wearing a mask. Should I call the attorney general on them?

Now I believe attempted murder charges need two things, in California, at least. One, is malice aforethought, and that sounds like it was there. However, two, there must have been a direct/substantial attempt such as, oh I don't know, like firing the gun. Planning isn't enough.

If just thinking about it then probably the entire adult population is guilty of that and a lot in the last year for some unknown reason.

Ok, everyone own up.

This is going to be interesting experiment. A buffoonish, erratic authoritarian figure trying to cement control while facing declining popularity mostly as a result of his own actions and incompetence.

I don't think he will succeed, but I think transfer of power will be far nastier than 2020.

I have no idea who will run but rest assure they will probably scream corrupt voting right after their loss if Republican. Pretty much a mantra now. Just wish they could be more like a 10 year who then takes their bat and goes home. If only they would go home...
