                • 50 years ago to the day the Bangladesh liberation movement started. After a few months of struggle. A benefit concert organised by Ravi Shankar & George Harrison was held at Madison Square Garden in Aug of 1971

                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Co...for_Bangladesh

The event was the first-ever benefit of such a magnitude, and featured a supergroup of performers that included Harrison, fellow ex-Beatle Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and the band Badfinger. In addition, Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan – both of whom had ancestral roots in Bangladesh – performed an opening set of Indian classical music. The concerts were attended by a total of 40,000 people, and the initial gate receipts raised close to $250,000 for Bangladesh relief, which was administered by UNICEF.
                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Co...ngladesh_(film)

Harrison is asked by a reporter: "With all the enormous problems in the world, how did you happen to choose this one to do something about?" "Because I was asked by a friend if I would help, you know – that's all," is his reply.

                  00:00 - Bangla Desh
The track selection is apt for how things played out in the fire of Bangladesh's birth.

                  I was born in a cross-fire hurricane..

Admittedly, Bangladesh isn't the first thing that comes to mind when i hear this tune but there is a context.

                  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1970_Bhola_cyclone

The lack of any meaningful relief from then west Pakistan only added to determination of people in the east to break free

A hard rain's gonna fall is gripping when set to the imagery of the struggle.

how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?

And how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?

how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?

And how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
George Harrison wrote a song to raise awareness for the millions of refugees

                  My friend came to me
                  With sadness in his eyes
He told me that he wanted help
                  Before his country dies

Although I couldn't feel the pain
I knew I had to try
Now I'm asking all of you
To help us save some lives

                  Bangladesh, Bangladesh
Where so many people are dying fast
And it sure looks like a mess
                  I've never seen such distress

Now won't you lend your hand and understand?
                  Relieve the people of Bangladesh

                  Bangladesh, Bangladesh
                  Such a great disaster, I don't understand
But it sure looks like a mess
                  I've never known such distress

                  Now please don't turn away
I want to hear you say
                  Relieve the people of Bangladesh
                  Relieve Bangladesh
This concert was ahead of its time. Back in Aug 1971, there was no Bangladesh (Free Bengal)

It only comes into being at the end of the year.

Now, there was a second concert held the month after at the Oval in but no footage exists for it.

                  Goodbye Summer, Concert for Bangladesh

                    • Been going back and forth with Big Fella on Facebook about this.

                            • The earliest known version of this American folk song came out in 1858. Likely covered countless times since.

This cover by David Mumford is pretty chilled out,

For a contrast check out the version from the WW1 movie 1917
