  • Edgar Bronfman | 1929-2013

Edgar was the third son of Samuel and Saidye (nee Rosner) Bronfman. The Bronfman family immigrated to Canada from Eastern Europe. Edgar eventually took over his fathers distilling/bootlegging business (Seagram Company) and would turn it into a global conglomerate acquiring Tropicana, MCA Entertainment, and a 25% stake in DuPont. A graduate (class of 1951) of McGill University in Montreal, Mr. Bronfman passed away at his home in New York at the age of 84.

Bronfman served as president of the World Jewish Congress from 1981 until 2007. He was a champion for Jews in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and began to lobby the Soviet government in the 1970's to allow Jews to emigrate and pressed on through the 1980's under Gorbachev. Eventually, millions of Jews were allowed to leave the Soviet empire. Most settled in Israel and the United States.

I haven't forgotten your efforts Mr. Bronfman. May you Rest in Blessed Peace.
