so, as Black Friday rolls around here in the States...time to do a bit of research on where to blow my ill-gotten money. :)

any recommendations on a 27 inch monitor for under $400 US? i'd like a HD or even better, a Retina-quality monitor but i highly doubt they come for under that price.

You know, Eric, for that price, you can get a flat screen TV and use that as a monitor ... or two bottles of Lagavulin.

You can get something much much better for 400 bucks.

Check this: Amazon.com: Samsung UN32EH5300 32-Inch 1080p 60 Hz Smart LED HDTV (Black): Electronics

      32 inch 1080p LED TV for $329. 40 inch for $419.

Just one example. Stick to online retailers like Amazon, Newegg etc., and you'll get the best deals.

                Amazon.com: ips monitor - $200-$400 / 26 to 29.9 Inches / Monitors / Computers & Accessories: Electronics

Which one you should get depends on your preference.

If resolution is the most important thing to you, you might want to check out the QNIX monitor. I have never heard of the brand before but apparently they delivery 2560X1440 display resolution.

Alternatively, you can go for one of the $280 ish IPS, 1080p displays. The highly rated ones are all pretty good. IPS is important for color fidelity and making sure the color doesn't shift with viewing angle. If you go for one of the $280 monitors you might want to consider tuning the color using a Spyder4 Pro. It's a sensor and packaged software that allows you to tune your display's color to match reference colors standards. If you get the Pro version you can use the software on every monitor you own. Makes a huge difference in the color fidelity and how pleasing pictures look.

heard that QNIX apparently uses monitors which have been turned down quality-wise by some of the other companies, so it might be a crapshoot. then again it has pretty good reviews on amazon.

might go with either the ASUS MX279H or the HP Pavilion 27xi Silver / Black. the ASUS monitor seems to have slightly better quality.

                  decisions decisions.

Ha, those would be my choices also. No idea which is better.

Depends on the engineer's make and model.., anyways the more appropriate term here would be "geek".

Do they have those OLED monitors out yet, or are they too expensive still?

ahh, got the HP one already. supposed to come in today, we'll see.

the 4K monitors are out but they're still ungodly expensive even though the prices have been falling like a rock. (32 inch 4K monitor by ASUS went from $5000 to $3300 in approximately six months.) they also need to slim it down.

i'd give it another year or two, at least, before it finally falls under $1000...which is still a huge amount of $$ for a monitor.

In my experience, when viewed through beer goggles it doesn't matter if its HD or not.
