  • "If there was stuff to tie to, you'd just find more stuff to load it down with!"

The winner for this month's Forester are pictures like this:

Neat in an interesting way though I have to wonder if the owner is well exceeding his load limits.

I love my Forester. It's a great little car in that it can go a long, long way for a single person, multiple trips, before it finally has to be cleaned out to start over again.

Right now, mine has remains from Spring Festivals, spare boots, rain gear that was bought for Shimmy Mob, 6 gallon water Jerry cans waiting to be filled, pet food, 3 bags of kitty litter, cases of soda for an upcoming party, probably canned goods waiting to be unloaded, a pet taxi, my scuba gear, and lots and lots of paper to say nothing of the standard emergency gear.

As an American Q might say, "All in all, pretty well JUNKED!".

BUT........like I said, about at the limit to be cleaned out to be prepped for next week's tasks.

BUT.......if I had roof racks, would I be tempted for more loading? Probably yes......but no.

To me, external racks are meant only for, in the city, day tripping stuff. You might tie the ready gear up there, but once you got to where you were going, you either carry it with you, are there to pull on it as needed, or stuff it in the car and lock it.

Sure, on a long trip, perhaps camping, my Forester might look something like this,

I do ride but don't kayak/canoe/boat......yet; I suppose someday I could always have a skiff up there.......................

but day to day stuff, I don't think a roof rack is in the cards...........yet.

I'm impressed with those pictures. I've always loved station wagons since I was a kid in the 70's riding the back (seat belts? who needs seat belts).
The Subaru Outback/Forester are high on my list of wants. I got talked out of it last time I went vehicle shopping - want to trade for a Ram 1500? Worst piece of crap I've ever owned, and I've owned some pieces of crap, believe me.
"Bother", said Poo, chambering another round.

Do you know how hard it is to find a used Forester for sale?

It seems when we buy these things, we have them as much as we can forever. Mine is a 2002, over 100K miles and I still think of it as if I just got it....despite the dents, scratches, the item on the list to get it repainted.

As a matter of fact, a year or two ago, I was saying to a brother that I need to get the Forester repainted and he commented, why don't you just buy a new one (we were getting our inheritance at the time). I was rather aghast at the thought.....but then again, there is the difference between siblings to consider. My brothers are sedan people.....and they don't have a pickup, either! (my second "car", a -250 diesel for heavy cargo).

Back to the point. When I first bought the Forester, I did want a car that 10 years down the line, I still could be driving it................and I am!

I did the same thing in my college years to a 74 Honda civic hatchback. I didn't wast the space on the roof rack either. Nothing wrong with Subarus. You can do a lot with them.
Removing a single turd from the cesspool doesn't make any difference.

They are also good as emergency wardrobes!

I got up this morning to walk the dog, stepped outside in only jeans and tee and BRRRRRRRRR, it's 52 degrees this morning!

I had unloaded a lot of the Forester last night, but my leather jacket and two pairs of boots (all from Sheplers) were in there. So unlock the car, put the dog in the shot gun seat, and pull on well worned and WARM set of boots and jacket.......and off we went!

Didn't stay out that long, she's a small dog and she, despite LET'S WALK, LET'S WALK, LET'S WALK! mentality, was feeling that cold real quick, too!

It's more fun to be in comfortable clothes, especially LEATHER, than being tough and cursing resistant to the environment.

Saw the commercial for, I think, a Mazda 3; you know where they show people having fun out of the back of it and they take you thru the windshield to the next party?

Starts at $13Kish....and my Forester, a 2002, was $20,000 then.

I know all station wagons were not created equal but I have to wonder what all that Mazda CAN'T do to have a price tag like that.
