Man Faces Federal Investigation After Slapping Child on PlaneGio Benitez reports the latest on a mother's accusation that a man hit her kid.

Jonah Bennett, a 19-month-old boy, is at the center of an FBI investigation after a stranger allegedly smacked him on a flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta.

The toddler's mother, Jessica Bennett, told ABC News she was sitting in the aisle seat of row 28, alongside Joe Hundley, 60, a stranger.

"Jonah starts crying because he's feeling the pressure in his ears," Bennett said.

At that point, Hundley, according to court documents, told Bennett to "Shut that n-word baby up".

"I said, 'What did you just say?'" Bennett said. "And he was so drunk that he fell onto my face, and his mouth moved over to my ear and he said it, just directly into my ear.

Hundley, who is the president of an aircraft parts company in Idaho, then allegedly smacked Jonah.

"When I had looked at Jonah's face, he had, his eye was swollen...and it was bleeding," Bennett said. "I was just scared to death."

That's when fellow travelers stepped in.

"Ms. Bennett received assistance from several people on the plane, including male passenger Todd Wooten," court documents said.

Wooten, who was seated in row 16, said he heard derogatory language coming from the rear of the aircraft and witnessed Hundley slapping the child.

Hundley was charged with assault in an Atlanta federal court.

His attorney, Marcia Shein, said nobody should rush to judgement and that Hundley would be pleading not guilty.
Unfortunately my outrage bar is sort of low - can't stand children on airplanes.

How the hell does a grown man slap a child hard enough to leave a blackeye, let alone a strangers child. This calls for prison.

Racist language plus hitting a toddler - I'm sure he will be spending some time in jail and no doubt be "former president" of an airplane parts company.

Can't stand kids crying on airplanes - especially international flights.

He needs general population prison -- and be sure the prisoners know why he's there - a tough guy who beats up babies.
If he did that to my kid - he'd need a coroner.

He either quit or was fired from his job. Smart company if they outright fired him or "encouraged" him to resign.

According to his lawyer, he's going to plead Not Guilty. With all the witnesses that saw you strike that child, good luck with that one fella.
“He was the most prodigious personification of all human inferiorities. He was an utterly incapable, unadapted, irresponsible, psychopathic personality, full of empty, infantile fantasies, but cursed with the keen intuition of a rat or a guttersnipe. He represented the shadow, the inferior part of everybody’s personality, in an overwhelming degree, and this was another reason why they fell for him.”

Brats! Still breastfeeding @ 14 months

Cool way to soften people in the plane. Guess these two parents are one of those who hated kids on plane.
Those candies are also a nice bribe.

                14 weeks, mate, 14 weeks....

And kudos to the parents. They know that kids can be annoying on planes, and decided to do something to maybe minimize the inconvenience. Shame there aren't more people like them....

Pity the Air Marshall didn't cuff him and throw him to the floor to spend the rest of the flight thinking about what he had said and done.

This guy is psycho man. In India he would have got beaten up on the flight itself.

Coming to irritating kids, I can deal with the loud whiny ones. A good set of earplugs, or if there is a movie, and your are set.

Its the ones right behind you kicking against your backrest which I generally draw the line at.

In some cases it should be legal to smack the parent around...
