  • What Food Are You Eating?

I know we already have a recipie thread, but I am hoping this thread will have a different purpose. I'll leave it to the wisdom of the mods whether this thread stands alone or is merged.

Late last year I made myself a 'pre-New Year's Resolution'. I decides to take advantage of the remarkable diversity & quality of food in my home town to try a new food every week. This may be a meal, or just something different. This is complicated by a couple of factors: 1) I really dislike seafood; 2) My actual New year's Resolution this year was to drop at least 10kg, which means less fat & carbs. Oh well. Life wasn't meant to be easy. I'm planning to document my adventures with photos (sadly most of them on my crappy phone cam) so I thought I'd share.

I'm not going to limit my photos to just my 'new' food. I'm also going to throw in other stuff I'm eating or have eaten - I took a bunch of great shots in the US last year & Thailand this year. I'm hoping people will join in with either photos or just tales of what they are eating. Hopefully this will complement the 'recipies' thread.

    some starters:

St Kilda is a great place for food & has been since the 50s. This Chicken Burrito wasn't the best thing I have ever eaten, but it is still pretty yummy

In the 1940s & 1950s the bayside suburb of St Kilda & a number of surrounding suburbs became the home for Australia's largest & most concentrated Jewish community. The vast majority were Eastern European Jews from places like Poland & they brought with them many things, including food. As a young child visiting from the country a trip to Acland St was a particular treat. We would stare into the windows in amazement and disappointment at only being allowed to chose one item. It felt like we had been transported to a different place & time. It still does.

This is a Viennese Coffee ring. Beautiful dark chocolate on a perfectly textured biscuit filled with a magical dark brown coffee flavoured concoction the consistency of praline. Damn that diet!

    Good on you Pete!!

I don't take pictures and my resources restrict going out on a regular basis. At one, more financially-endowed time, however, I fancied myself as a premier culinaire. I promise to live vicariously through the adventures you and others provide here.

        Pete,

If you are serious about dropping 10kg... don't visit that shop, i gained 2kg for just browsing the photos.

          Gents,

Don't feel restricted by the lack of photos & feel free to share stories past & present. You may have eaten something interesting or someone may post something that brings back memories.

I hear you Doc. Those places are LEATHAL. Fortunately I live far enough away that I am rarely tempted...and to be honest they are a wee bit intimidating. I will pay an occasional visit, purely for research purposes of course.

OK, just to show I can be healthy. One of the joys of living next to a strip dominated by the Vietnamese is that they love tropical fruit. Even better, Australia is a large producer & exporter of tropical fruit, so when in season it is usually available cheaply. These beauties cost me $7 in total. I either chop them up & eat them as desert/breakfast/a snack or I stick a kebab stick in a piece & freeze it. Magic on a hot day.

                Today on my menu...

Saffron Risotto with Rosemary Lamb loins.

This is one of the first Italian dishes when i was in Alessandria (near Milan) that wasn't pasta.

The shock and awe were tremendous at the moment.

4 lamb loin chops, each about 1.5 inches thick (about 1.25 lbs.)
1 stem fresh rosemary leaves (2 Tablespoons)
                2 cloves garlic
                1 teaspoon sea-salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
1 Tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for oiling skillet

These lamb chops are seared on the stove, then finished in the oven - but grilling would also be an excellent choice.

Make a paste: Using a mortar and pestle, mini-chopper (or a knife!) grind the fresh rosemary leaves with the garlic, salt and pepper until it forms a coarse powder. Add one Tablespoon of olive oil and stir to combine. Rub the rosemary spice mixture over the lamb chops. Let marinate on a plate at room temperature for 30 minutes.

                Heat oven to 200°C/400°F.

Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat and coat the bottom with a thin layer of olive oil. Place lamb chops into the skillet and sear for four minutes on each side, then transfer the skillet to the oven and finish for approximately 4 more minutes for medium. (More or less time, depending upon personal preference.) Makes 4 servings.

Disclaimer: The recipe and the pic are taken from a site as I am lazy kind of person who can't take photos with greasy hands

Recommend a good dry red wine with it.

Hmmm, I think that would blow out pretty much every food category I'm supposed to avoid. Looks nice though.

I used to eat a lot of rice, especially with curries etc. One of my favourite rice dishes was a risotto-like thing made with onion, broccoli & a bunch of fresh grated parmesan. Then when it is all mixed in you add some beaten eggs & bake the thing in the oven. SO NICE hot or cold. Of course, that was 35kg ago. No more I am afraid.

Risotto aint that calories heavy... Unless you have issues with starch, I don't see a reason to avoid it, weight-wise.

You can change lamb for chicken tho.

I never eat junk foods and strive to use only fresh and healthy ingredients. I usually go with Israeli cuisine such as cold pasta salad, fish, falafel, pita, shawarma, kifta, kebabs, basmati rice, etc.

My girlfriend unequivocally declared that my beer gut has got to go and made me promise that I will have salad at least once a week. I agreed, but I told her that the salad will have some sort of animal in it, either chicken, tuna or salami. She's agreed... for now.....

That's a fine lookin burrito Bigfella. My home bar back in T.O. is a place called Sneaky Dee's that does kick ass Mexican, with cheap beer to wash it down. I love a good Mexican. I just had sweet amd sour chicken with rice and a pork spring roll from a hawker stall here in KL. I had coffee and donuts for breakfast. I probably could have done better by going local but you can't get good coffee or donuts in England.
