Didn't realise you can catch flu in the middle of summer !!

Hmm....

It's around year round but we tend to see it spike in colder weather as people stay in doors in close quarters and less air circulation.

I am a volunteer docent at a museum and have pulled some extra shifts...lots of kids groups come through. That could have been the vector.

Learned a valuable lesson.

Hiring a moving company, the lowest price I got was 2 people and a truck runs $180 an hour. From the time they show up to load at the old house till they unload everything at the new house.

To rent a truck and do a self move, the truck would cost less than $400.And could have the truck for 3 days.

So we did a self move.

What I learned. I'm not 25 or even 35 years old anymore. I'm 58. I ache in places I didn't remember I had.

Yeah Gunny...not good. I can put my finger on the exact day where my back got reinjured...summer of 2013 helping my sister move in and as I was holding part of the truck load it shifted...and I felt things pop in my back like ziploc back opening...3 herniated discs.

Checkbook to pay people to move stuff is cheaper than checkbook to pay co-pays.

Everyone's having "Black Friday in July" sales.

New Washer and Dryer. The earliest they can deliver one to my house is "Hopefully the end of Aug."

New couch? Might get one delivered at the end of Oct.

Would be nice if they had something in stock to sell

But on the bright side, I took my 2019 TRD Sport Tacoma in for an oil change. The dealership offered me $43 thous for it. I payed 36 two years ago. Tempting but no deal. Can't afford to replace it

Yeah, I think I was ahead of the bow wave of "COVID buys".

I got new washer & dryer in May 2020 when no one was in the store.

Same with getting new windows for the house...did them last September before prices went up.

Heat pump/ac replacement? Last July.

Nothing big this year fortunately.

COVID impacts production, most consumer goods are being shipped from overseas and this results in backups for container ships in our container ports...not to mention our rail lines are clogged as well.

I counted 16 container ships sitting in San Francisco Bay , from Pri-Fly aboard the Hornet, this past Saturday waiting to get into the Port of Oakland.

Several sitting in the Chesapeake waiting to head into Port of Baltimore.

US 460 which leads from Norfolk to I-95 near my house is a steady stream of tractor trailers coming up from the ports of Tidewater.

Happening all over.

Ah. for a moment i was wondering whether it was the long term effects of the hurricane affecting Gunny's area but it appears to be nation wide.

Not enough truckers.

Online sales go up, you figure salaries too and that draws in more truckers.

Self resolving. But there's only so many truckers to go around.

These shortages you experience are a result of optimal resource employment i think. You're getting the most for the least cost.

Under normal conditions everyone's happy but if an exception occurs then the system gets bogged down.

The alternative is you have surplus labour or goods sitting around being unproductive. Then the politics comes in.

Dealing with trades unions and inevitable strikes.

Most for least or headroom to deal with exceptions. Usually the former have won that argument in your country.

You will build the necessary infrastructure as and only when the need arises. And this is the right way to go about it if you don't want to end up with more debt.

See the debt other countries racked up with by going full hog on infrastructure. Japan in the 90s and the subsequent slump the decade after is a prime example.

To get sales going, retailers are discounting goods and the punters are lining up.

Can't go on forever. The prices will rise slowly and then your shortage of drivers takes care of itself.
