most of the issue with that isn't coming from first-generation immigrants, precisely for the reason you stated. they know how messed up it is.

the usual picture of radicalization nowadays is disaffected second-generation immigrants rejecting the conformation of their elders and looking into what they THINK are their roots (but in reality is oil-money funded wahhabism).

The main problem with EU/european immigration policy is that it's built on relatively liberal grounds but has less of the cultural melting pot experience that the US has, as they're more familiar with blood-and-soil type of patriotism.

Basically I never had a problem with Sikhs or Hindus or Buddhists if they want to go to Britain and do the best for themselves, their families and the country as long as they respect and obey British law and custom. I do have a problem with 'sharia law' being practiced etc when it is not the law the of the land. When in Rome do as the Romans.

AN UNELECTED Lib Dem peer has hinted her party may ‘deny the will of the people’ by trying to stop Britain leaving the European Union.

Theresa May had hoped to be able to trigger Article 50 – and start the formal Brexit process – without the agreement of Parliament.

France has a legally "color-blind" society, so things like affirmative action or talking about race are considered taboo. somehow i don't think racial matters in France are any better because race isn't discussed. banlieues still exist and racial resentment still run high in quite a few places.

multiculturalism has -always- been force-fed by a government, whether in an empire or a democracy. jews and arabs didn't fight in Palestine when the Ottoman Empire were around because they loved each other, it was because they both feared getting stomped on. desegregation in the US didn't happen because it "sprung up spontaneously". "no irish or chinese need apply" didn't disappear spontaneously.

culture and law/government is inextricably linked, there's nothing "natural" about it.

it's both, really, and should not be an "one or another" proposition. even if you don't accept the multicultural "mixed salad" idea of the nation, even the "melting pot" idea implies that there's going to be traces of the old country culture mixed in. we'd all be poorer without a japan-town or pho or celebrating a diwali.

i certainly agree with you that immigrants should follow the laws of the nation, but once they're citizens there's absolutely nothing wrong with them playing a part in changing said laws and culture, so long as they get everyone else on board too.

the irony about the statement "when in rome, do as the romans do" is that roman culture was a huge amalgamation of other cultures. greek learning for the elites, etruscan/celt culture for the not-so-elite, greek/egyptian religious pantheon, later replaced by a middle eastern monotheist religion.

by the way, all of this is NOT saying that multiculturalism is ALWAYS good and that it should work for everyone. there's pros and cons, and it'll differ for each country.

The European Parliament is to consider a plan that would allow British citizens to opt-in and keep their European Union citizenship – and its associated benefits – once the UK leaves the EU.

The proposal, which has been put before a parliamentary committee as an amendment, would grant the citizens of former member states the voluntary right to retain “associate citizenship” of the EU.

Associate citizens would be allowed to keep free movement across the EU as full citizens currently enjoy and would be allowed to vote in European Parliament elections, meaning they were still represented in Brussels.

Amendment 882 was proposed by Charles Goerens, a liberal MEP from Luxembourg. Brexit campaigners in Britain reacted with anger to the idea, arguing that it would discriminate against Leave voters and that it was “an outrage”.

The amendment suggests the provision of “European associate citizenship for those who feel and wish to be part of the European project but are nationals of a former Member State; offers these associate citizens the rights of freedom of movement and to reside on its territory as well as being represented in the Parliament through a vote in the European elections on the European lists”.

Though the British Government has been coy on what it wants Britain’s post-Brexit future to look like, it is likely that British citizens will lose the automatic right to live and work in the EU after Brexit.



This is because Theresa May has made clear that she would like to restrict freedom of movement from EU countries to the UK – a policy that would likely be reciprocated by the EU for British citizens.

Jayne Adye, director of the Get Britain Out campaign described the proposal as divisive and said it was “totally unacceptable” for British people to retain the advantages of EU membership.

“This is an outrage. The EU is now attempting to divide the Great British Public at the exact moment we need unity. 17.4 million people voted to ‘Leave’ the EU on June 23rd and as a result the UK as a whole will get Brexit,” she said.

“Brexit means laws which impact the people of the UK will be created by accountable politicians in Westminster. It is totally unacceptable for certain citizens in the UK to subject themselves to laws which are created by politicians who are not accountable the British people as a whole.

“Discriminating against people based on their political views shows there are no depths the EU will not sink to.”

Brexit is the best thing that could have happened for the SNP. It gives the Scots a real strong moral and economic reason to leave the UK.
