Of course if he loses Texas and Florida will probably want to succeed so there's that . BTW I 'd probably add New York to your list of States. Frankly the loss of California, Texas or New York would do great harm. Although seriously? I can't see it coming to that.

Doesn't a large swatch of eastern Oregon/Washington want to become part of "Greater Idaho"?

Something called the ACW stated that the States do not have the legal right to secede unilaterally.

Would anyone notice if they did?

Which is why I said ideally. Of course nothing that Trump has done is legal so why worry.

Well with California's economy being 5th largest in the world, and 14% of the U.S. economy, someone is going to notice eventually. Heck, what happened to North Island, Pendleton, Bremerton, and Pearl Harbor just for laughs...

Similar counties in California but all are low population regions. Besides they could simply move to Idaho, Texas, or maybe Florida...

                • Hate to jump the gun but it's looking inevitable now. So here are my 5 main issues/concerns:

                  1. Do at least some Americans apply for asylum or decide to move Canada at some point in the next few years? I know we say this every US election but this time feels different. We just finally cut immigration numbers, but are we going to be making exceptions for Americans?
                  2. If the mass deportation plans go ahead, there's going to be a rush to our border for those not wanting to go back to where they came from originally. What the hell do we do?
                  3. Tariffs on everything. How is this going to affect the economy? NAFTA 2.0 was such a 'disaster' we have to re-negotiate it in 2026. Is the auto sector under threat?
                  4. We're nowhere close to 2% military funding. And hardly a plan to get to it. How much are we going to get shit on and how are we going to come up with the money to pay for it?
                  5. Climate change policies will effectively be eliminated in the US. Are we going to just keep on fighting the good fight or are we going to say fuck it, what's the point?

Also is what's about to happen in the US going to scare the shit out of people to come back to Trudeau? I've always believed this was his hope the entire time, that a Trump administration would scare people back to the Liberal tent. Not saying it will happen, but how will this affect our federal politics? Or will Canadians think PP can deal with a Trump administration better?

                  • If it's any consolation big business will almost certainly do it's damnedest to talk Trump out of his '60% tariff on everything' policy. For a start it will increase their costs significantly if they can't easily find domestic replacements for foreign components and secondly it will put a rocket under inflation. And if China and the EU etc respond in kind? I'm hoping that Trump will be convinced to apply some symbolic tariff hikes that he can sell to the US public without bringing the worlds economy crashing down in a tariff war! (Hoping. )
If you are emotionally invested in 'believing' something is true you have lost the ability to tell if it is true.

We didn't make the exception for Americans during Bush (both Sr and Jr) and sent deported American deserters back to the US.

We have agreements in place that we will deport them back to their countries of origin.

As bad as USMCA is, it is a solid wall against Trump's threats.

We have 3 oceans protecting us and the US is NOT going to allow any enemy to land on North or even South American shores.

Do you know of any tax the Liberals willingly slashed?

This is a different time and the circumstances are different.

Not if they are backed up in the court system. The court system is already flooded with asylum seekers and refugee claims.

Not if they renegotiate it. I don't believe trade agreements, or any agreements, are reliable with an unchecked Trump admin.

No but they can shit on us and use economic retaliation for slow walking spending on the military.

2015 middle class tax cut off the top of my head.
                        See above

You mean like the Vietnam era draft dodgers cart blanche? The point is that this is nothing new. We've open and closed borders to Americans discontent dating all the way back to the Loyalists and the Fenians.

That is if they even reach the courts. Canadian Border Agency can deny refugee status on the spot. I'm not familiar enough with border practices to state how often nor how legal their actions are but just because you landed in Canada does not automatically entitled you to Canadian rights.

I know of no instance where Trump arbitrary disregard the terms of any treaty. He obeyed every tenet involved when withdrawing from a treaty (ie, the INF Treaty)

As he should. We promised to live up to NORAD and NATO standards.

That doesn't eliminate the fact that Trudeau ain't going to eliminate the carbon tax.

                            • Trump saying we're getting a 25% tariff on all goods his first day in office because of the border...

                              • So Trump wants to stop the flow of people over the border? OK I guess. Canada now has simply no choice but to stop US Citizens crossing the border to buy cheap medicine.
