    Tempe mosque vandalism decried
    Police vow more patrols

TEMPE - Muslim leaders and police spoke out against the latest attack at a Tempe mosque after vandals spray-painted the front door early Thursday.

A witness spotted two men painting the door of the mosque with a swastika, a thunderbolt-shaped "SS" and other Nazi symbols about 2 a.m. Deedra Abboud, director of the Council of American Islamic Relations in Arizona, said no one was in the building at the time, but surveillance videos may have recorded the suspects.

Abboud joined other Muslims and Tempe Police Chief Ralph Tranter on Thursday at a press conference outside the Islamic Cultural Center, where the mosque is housed near Sixth Street and Forest Avenue. This is the fifth incident of vandalism at the center this year. In July, vandals set fire to a car parked there, and the three other incidents also involved vehicles, Abboud said.

Police are looking for two men, 19 to 22 years old, who were seen in a faded red, 1970s pickup truck.

Tranter promised to increase patrols near the center, which is around the corner from the police station.

"This is as clear as you can get that a hate crime has occurred," Tranter said.

Joel Breshin, a consultant with the Anti-Defamation League, said the graffiti on the door of the mosque are the work of neo-Nazis "trying to get attention to themselves."

Muhammed Zubair, 40, member of the Tempe Human Relations Commission, was happy to hear local Muslims and police express their outrage and concern.

"This now validates more that we have elements in our community with hate directed towards our center," Zubair said. "Overall our community is very good, but it is still very alarming."

Anyone with information is urged to call Tempe police at (480) 350-8311.

Your attention to detail is astonishing Ben. It was a Mosque that was vandalised in Tempe. And this one was before.

It might of been among the hundred at least. That were defaced with such words & symbols shortly after 911.

The leadership of the hate groups. Started blaming Israel for the Septmeber 11th attacks. While thier goons showed support for America. By spray painting racist words & symbols on Mosques all across the country.

At least it was a change of pace from burning American Flags. And thier mission to stop anyone & everyone from immigrating to the United States.

Yes that was sarcasm. Unless I'm wrong. And attacking any Religion is considered anti-Semetism.

No, technically, Anti-Semetism is attacks against Jews. Originally, however, it meant attacks against Shem, son of Noah. Muslims and Jews fall under that category. Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and all others don't.
