  • Recovering from COVID-19

The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) April 2021 World Economic Outlook (WEO) starts with a note of optimism – “a way out of this health and economic crisis is increasingly visible” – and from that, projects a better economic growth trajectory than either the October or January editions dared.

    _ _ Global GDP 2019 _ _ 2020 _ _ _ 2021 _ _ _ _2022

    WEO 10/20_ _ _2.8% _ _-4.4% _ _+5.2% _ _ _ +4.2%

    WEO 1/21 _ _ +2.8% _ _ -3.5% _ _+5.5% _ _ _ +4.2%

    WEO 4/21 _ _ +2.5% _ _ -3.3% _ _+6.0% _ _ _ +4.4%

On a more sober note, the loss of per capita income in less developed economies is about 20%, while in more developed ones, it is just 11% (China is excluded from both categories). And so, 95 million more people will be classified as in poverty, and 80 million more as undernourished.
