  • let's be clear, the Confederate monuments weren't designed as "memorialization" of heritage/traitors/etc.

they were designed as a very in-your-face reminder to certain sections of the populace about who is on top.
There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "My ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."- Isaac Asimov

Aside from that, the Scots and the Irish don't have a soft spot for England. I can't count how many times traitors got popularized in the Turkic/Mongol Khanates. Same can be said for pre-Crusade Europe. The CCP is now lionizing the NRA for their acts in WWII. Tito is remembered fondly in all the FYR.

Then, there is Africa. Hutus and Tustsis still believe they've done nothing wrong, 2nd Congo War ain't really finished.

Actually, not that hard if you can stomache reading about the worst of humanity.
Any nation with any length of history is going to have a crap ton of this because history gets revised and certain ethnic groups get marginalized but not totally destroyed. Spain has freaking two movements right at this moment, and the Francoist period was not that long ago.
Also, it's only treason if you lose.

The US is still pretty young and has been politically stable for most of its history, so we don't have a ton of this.

Yes, but they were mostly put up by the regime that he founded or adherents to Marxist/Leninist movements. Can't think of any put up by Tsarists or Whites. I also recall quite a few of those statues (though obviously not all) coming to grief after the fall of Communism, along with a lot of other statues & memorials to said regimes, including place names. I would argue that particular purge has been far more comprehensive than what has happened to Confederate monuments, and they were from regimes that lasted decades, even generations.

Alot still exist in Belarus and Muscovy. Most of the Lenins in Ukraine went in early 2014. I saw a bunch of people trying to break apart one Lenin statue in the outskirts of Lviv/Lwow in February 2014 and one old guy hugging this lump of concrete trying to protect it. Don't know if he was an unyielding Leninist or what his motives were but it was quite sad to me.

That is so cool. I can just imagine the number of air mech war instructors you can send around the world, especially Canada. I can't wait to read FM-SPARKS!

Kato, does Germany even HAVE an Army anymore?

In Germany memoralization of the 1848 revolutions and the subsequent counterrevolutions is still rather controversial between political camps, and while not very public there are hundreds of memorials for "either side", both from the past and from more recent decades.

It's of course not as controversial, but there were curious cases such as when the battle over whether a square in Berlin - site of some fights in '48 - should be renamed "Square of the March Revolution" took nearly a decade between the conservative government and opposition in the 90s, with it ending in the site being named that formally in the register - but you won't find any signs there telling you that...

We sorta subcontracted that to the Dutch i think. And have the Poles and Romanians lined up somewhere in the plans, if the Czechs don't get there first.
